MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

Which is where ultimately it looks like all they care about is the money and don't give a damn about the sport for the fans. They will ultimately lose in the court of public opinion barring some unforeseen media campaign.

We all know it's more nuanced than this but the lowest common denominator will end up being, "all the other sports have a cap and they don't have the competitive imbalance, baseball doesn't have a cap and only the big spending teams are competing for the title every year."

I just don't see how the players overcome that.
Yup

The interesting part is now that Tony Clark is no longer the head of the MLBPA, there might be some wiggle room somewhere. The new interim director has worked in the NBA, NHL and NFL....

If Tony Clark was still there, you absolutely know the players union wouldn't give a rat's ass about public opinion and be tone deaf to the whole thing. they still might not, but the guy leading them now has extensive experience in capped leagues at least...

This is the first All Star game I really remember watching....baseball was peak back then...
Back in the old days if you lived on the west coast and the game was being played on the east coast you had to settle for listening to the game on the radio because the local channels wouldn't pre empt scheduled programing for a baseball game. Up until the 80's I listened to most all star games on the radio. The first I remember watching on TV was the 1984 all star game in SF when Huey Lewis and the New sand the national anthem.
