MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

They don’t have the money so I’d bet the field.

If they did find a way to sign him, he would instantly crater and be horrible contract that would cripple them for years.

Or he’d get hurt and have the same net effect.

Bottom line is it’s the Reds. You can bet your last dollar on failure.

Cal Raleigh got fucked over by the Yankmee/East Coast bias.

You're never going to see another season like that from a catcher. Aaron Judge was a subpar Right Fielder who played 50+ games at DH. The seasons aren't remotely the same and yeah batting average as an argument against a friggin catcher with 1100+ chances and no passed balls is fucking moronic.

Agreed! Bright shiny object!

Nah. Raleigh hit 7 more homers and had 11 more RBI, but Judge was 100 points better on BA, OBP, and SLG and 200 points better on OPS. 9.7 WAR vs 7.4. Judge’s numbers are unreal.

I don't follow baseball enough to know.....but this "he's a catcher" stuff feels the same as Ferentz winning COY because he did MoRe WiTh LeSs.

It's really not a cousin to that argument, (which I hate as much as anyone).

It's more like "He ran almost as fast but had to wear ankle weights" if you want an analogy.

Catching at the MLB level is so hard that most guys can have an MLB job and can't hit at all "he hits well for a catcher" is a common phrase and not meant as an insult. To put up numbers that are in the same ballpark as an MVP caliber season from Judge (Right Field and DH are NOT difficult defensive positions) should get the catcher some extra credit is the line of reasoning.

I can see it's merits but here is my way of looking at it (using Fangraph WAR)

Overall
Judge: 10.1
Raleigh 9.1

Going by just their bats and adjusting for ballparks (wRC+)
Judge: 204
Raleigh: 161

So Judge was 43% better than Raleigh at hitting and that is what the MVP is really all about.

Take the defensive component of their WAR and yes, Raleigh is monstrously more valuable*
Judge: -3.8
Raleigh: 16.3
*there are a lot of advanced metrics for defense and no one agrees on them nor is their one clear defensive metric to rule them all. That said, a catcher is always going to be more valuable than a RF/DH.

....but that is baked in to overall WAR so even with that Judge comes out as "more valuable" given the data and metrics we use today for every other statistical measurement of baseball.

Raleigh is a likeable guy and to do what he did from the catchers position is a once in a generation kind of thing so it's unfortunate he can't get some kind of award for it but that's baseball. She is a cruel mistress.
