MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

Will Smith can’t stop winning World Series.

Think about the depth of your talent when you have a Wil Smith catching and is about the ~4/5th weapon on your team.

It's this scenario we just saw. One superstar has a terrible series (Betts) one is getting older and was so/so (Freeman) but still won a game for you so some of these other "role players" have their moment to step up. When Wil Smith is sort of your answer to a "role player" you are so damn good you win back to back World Series.

I don't like it for the Reds but I sure as hell respect what they have built. Making it even worse, other than Max Muncy, none of them really piss me off. Most are likeable guys. Freddy Freeman is a HOF guy as well as player. Pure class and grace.

I wish I could hate them more.

Way back around the time Ishiro appeared, I remember reading that small market teams like the Reds can't afford to scout far-off lands like Asia for new talent. So, as we all know, the financial discrepancy goes beyond the huge contracts. Of course the Dodgers, not the Reds, add the best Japanese pitchers to their rotation and lock them in with obscene sums of money.

And when a small or mid franchise does get a superstar like Ohtani, they usually don't get better by letting him go to the dodgers, phils, yankees or mets. I don't know the details of Ohtani leaving the Angels, but they should be one of the best teams 2 or 3 years out from that. Like Dallas trading Herschel Walker. But they're still one of the worst.

Scouting isn’t a bidding war for Japan’s best and very well known 2-3 players each year. Scouting is finding the next Acuna in the DR when he’s playing in a sandlot at 16.

I didn't say it's a bidding war. I doubt the Reds have the financial ability to build a truly global international scouting network.
"(Dodgers) global scouting network stretches far beyond the U.S., embracing the rich diversity of talent from countries in Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Africa."

Interesting sidenote. "Consider the Dodgers’ acquisition of Roki Sasaki, a Japanese pitching phenom, just before Deng’s signing. Sasaki’s deal required a creative financial strategy, one that involved trading with the Cincinnati Reds.. "
I am assuming this refers to Dodgers sending a career .260 batting avg utility player (Lux) to the Reds. https://packedhousesports.com/2025/...ion-pioneering-the-future-of-baseball-talent/

The Reds do have a two way Asian player down in complex league or maybe low A now. IIRC they got him out of Taiwan?

Let's be honest though, if the Reds had somehow fallen backwards into the rights to Ohtani he'd be a fucking nobody or injured.

Or an injured nobody. We have a lot of those.

Elly de la Cruz is scouting. Roki Sasaki is not. Furthermore, you and I could setup a scouting facility in the South Sudan. Waste of time.

But again, Ohtani is not a product of any MLB scouting.

Looks like the Dodgers got a good deal for Sasaki with a $760,000 salary and they only had to trade an average-at-best utility player to the Reds and someone else to Phillies. Sasaki's signing bonus of $6.5M inspired me to look up Reds signing bonuses. Reds FA signing bonuses don't seem to be public or maybe they didn't give bonuses to Martinez and Trevino, don't know. The Reds did sign a 2025 draftee with a $5.5M bonus. But Blake Snell's $52M signing bonus dwarfs even the Reds' highest salary of $21M (Nick Martinez).

Here is a breakdown of the Dodgers mind-blowing payroll.

"Deferred money played a prominent role in the recent signings of top free agents such as Blake Snell ($182-million contract, $60 million deferred), Tanner Scott ($72-million contract, $21 million deferred), Freddie Freeman ($162-million contract, $57 million deferred), and Teoscar Hernández (who has deferred $31.5 million of the $89.5 million guaranteed in his two Dodgers contracts).
It also was featured in extensions for Mookie Betts ($365-million contract, $115 million deferred), Will Smith ($140-million contract, $50 million deferred) and Tommy Edman ($74-million contract, $25 million deferred)."

Shohei Ohtani’s $700-million contract ($680 million deferred)

As a result, the Dodgers have now accrued $1.039 billion of deferred salary over the last five years. For comparison, only the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox top even $50 million in current deferrals, according to Spotrac.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto $325-million signing, $50 million signing bonus
Tyler Glasnow $136.5-million extension, $10 million bonus
Max Muncy $24M salary over 2 years

My point here is F- the Dodgers
