Clayton Kershaw will not start for the Dodgers on opening day, manager Dave Roberts announced Monday, confirming what has been obvious for weeks and effectively ending Kershaw’s franchise-record streak of consecutive opening-day starts at eight.

“When he’s ready to pitch for us is when he’ll pitch for us,” Roberts said.

A decision on who will start opening day hasn’t been made. Ross Stripling will replace Kershaw in the rotation, Roberts announced late Monday night, after the right-hander was dominant over four shutout innings against Texas.

Shoulder inflammation sabotaged Kershaw’s spring days after Roberts had named him the club’s opening-day starter for the ninth straight year. He went four days without throwing after logging a bullpen session Feb. 20. He didn’t pitch off a mound again until March 11, nearly three weeks later. Kershaw threw only fastballs in the first session and again in the second bullpen. He used his entire arsenal off a mound for the first time in his third session Sunday.

Kershaw, who turns 31 on Tuesday, will next throw in a live batting practice session on Wednesday. If he emerges healthy, he’d ideally throw again on Saturday. Roberts, however, said he isn’t sure whether that is the plan.

A sellout crowd of 45,787 clamoring to see what is likely Ichiro Suzuki's final pro appearance in Japan was treated to an offensive showcase in the first of a two-game series. The Mariners and A's combined for 16 hits and five home runs, including a game-changing grand slam from Santana in his Mariners debut.

Santana inside-outed an 0-1 pitch, sneaking it inside the right-field foul pole to clear the bases and put Seattle on top 5-2 in the top of the third. The blast capped a five-run inning, and the Mariners would not relinquish the lead.

The bulb flashes of cameras started immediately when Ichiro walked to the on-deck circle in the top of the third. The crowd roared during his two plate appearances, and when he made his exit in the fourth inning, coming out with the position players only to turn around and return to the dugout. He was replaced by Daniel Vogelbach.

"Ichiro will play in the game tomorrow. Not sure if he will start but he will get out there at some point," manager Scott Servais said. "With Ichiro's situation coming into this series certainly wanted to give him an opportunity to play, but we also wanted to give other players an opportunity to get into the game and do what's best for the team."

Servais said the Mariners are going one day at a time deciding whether Ichiro would make the 25-man roster when the team returns to the U.S.

Hunter Strickland finished off the A's 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth, fanning Chapman to earn the save in his debut for the Mariners.

"It was not a good job by me," Fiers said of his outing and giving up a 2-1 lead on Santana's blast.

He faced only seven batters his first two innings and threw only 22 pitches, but faded in the third inning and was chased after 58 pitches.

Gonzales fared better on the other side in his debut as pitching staff ace for the Mariners, going six innings, giving up three earned runs, striking out four and walking one. He exited with the lead despite giving up runs each of the first three innings, but settling down and facing only 10 batters his final three frames.

AP source: Mets, deGrom agree to $137.5 million, 5-year deal

NEW YORK (AP) -- NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets have agreed to a $137.5 million, five-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The deal guarantees an additional $120.5 million over four seasons.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the agreement was subject to a successful physical.

New York and deGrom had agreed in January to a $17 million, one-year deal, and he was on track to be eligible for free agency after the 2020 season.

His new deal calls for a $10 million signing bonus, a $7 million salary this season, $23 million in 2020, $33.5 million each in 2021 and 2022 and $30.5 million in 2023. The Mets have a $32.5 million option for 2024.

DeGrom has the right to opt out of the deal after the 2022 season and become a free agent.

A right-hander who turns 31 in June, deGrom had a 1.70 ERA last year yet went 10-9. He allowed three runs or fewer in 29 consecutive starts to close the season, but the Mets were 11-18 in those games.

DeGrom is 55-41 with a 2.67 ERA in five big league seasons. Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen represented the two-time All-Star as co-head of CAA Baseball before the team hired him last year.

Todd Helton cited on DUI charge, enters treatment center

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Former All-Star first baseman Todd Helton has received a misdemeanor citation on a charge of driving under the influence after getting involved in a one-car accident.

''He realizes there are parts of his behavior that need to change, and he is focused on doing just that,'' Stephen Ross Johnson said in a statement.

According to a Knox County sheriff's report, Helton's car struck a telephone pole March 18 before 6 p.m. Officers said Helton indicated he had taken an Ambien at about 2 p.m. One officer saw a cup in Helton's car that ''had the odor of an alcoholic beverage.''

Officers said they were unable to conduct field sobriety tests or interview Helton in depth on the scene because he was being transported to a hospital for further evaluation. They said that ''due to the totality of the circumstances, and due to the arrestee needing immediate medical treatment away from the scene,'' Helton was given a misdemeanor citation ''in lieu of custodial arrest.''

Johnson said Helton required emergency medical care but wasn't seriously injured. Officers said Helton voluntarily gave blood for chemical testing while at the hospital.

Helton, 45, retired in 2013 after spending his entire 17-year playing career with the Rockies. The five-time All-Star remains Colorado's career leader in numerous hitting categories, including hits (2,519), homers (369), runs (1,401), RBIs (1,406) and total bases (4,292).

He had a DUI arrest in Colorado in 2013.
