Harper turned down 10 yr, $300M?!? How much does he think he's going to get and who the eff is crazy enough to give it to him.

Just for giggles, I compared Harper's 2018 season to Adam Duvall's 2017......other than walks and the resulting big bump to OBP, the numbers were shockingly similar. I know Harper gets pitched around a lot more, but seriously? $30M per year is nuts.

The Yankmes don't need another strikeout heavy bat in that order. They really need another top-3 lineup guy (Machado) and a better option behind Sanchez as a backup who can take over when they move him to 1st base.

Of course they are talking about moving Harper to 1st base so.....yeah. With them trading the farm for Paxton last night I'd say Harper to NYY has a decent shot of happening now, even though I think they would be better served in going after Machado as a Shortstop and trading Gregorius once he comes back from Tommy John.

Nationals agree to deal with two-time all-star pitcher Patrick Corbin

Chelsea Janes
December 4 at 4:47 PM

The Washington Nationals landed the consensus prize of the starting pitching market Tuesday when they agreed to terms on a six-year deal with left-hander Patrick Corbin, according to a person familiar with the situation. The terms of the deal are not yet known, though Yahoo and others have reported it is worth $140 million and does include that ever-present Nationals' specialty — deferred money.

The deal fills Washington’s most glaring hole, providing a proven arm behind Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Corbin, an all-star in 2013 and 2018, will be 29 to start the 2019 season. He pitched to a 3.15 ERA and an 11-7 record with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, one of his best in the big leagues. Since he debuted with the Diamondbacks in 2012, Corbin has a 3.91 ERA and struck out 8.5 batters per nine innings.

The lefty relies on a fastball that sits in the low-90s and a whiff-inducing slider, and actually held right-handed hitters to a lower batting average against (.213) than lefties (.239). He is not a proven ace in the way Scherzer was when the Nationals signed him to his seven-year megadeal, or even in the way Strasburg was when they extended him for $175 million. But with a reported average annual value of $23 million, Washington is not paying Corbin Scherzer or Strasburg money.

The Nationals hosted Corbin for a visit last week, one that included dinner with General Manager Mike Rizzo and managing principal owner Mark Lerner, who made their case. Corbin grew up in Upstate New York as a devout New York Yankees fan, so many in the industry speculated the Yankees — who also hosted him — had an inside track to sign him. According to reports, they were unwilling to give Corbin a sixth year on a deal, which led many to believe the free-spending Philadelphia Phillies would sign him. Ultimately, the Nationals seized him, and in so doing checked off another box on their offseason checklist.

Since the end of the regular season, the Nationals have traded for reliever Kyle Barraclough, signed reliever Trevor Rosenthal, signed catcher Kurt Suzuki, traded for catcher Yan Gomes, and now signed starter Corbin. Their biggest needs entering this offseason were starting pitching, catching and bullpen depth. They have addressed all of them a week before the winter meetings begin — and long before Bryce Harper’s contract situation seems likely to reach its resolution.

The Corbin signing is somewhat out of character for the Nationals, who have signed only two players after those players received qualifying offers — Scherzer and Daniel Murphy. Because the Diamondbacks made Corbin the qualifying offer and he turned it down, the Nationals will forfeit their second- and fifth-round draft picks as well as $1 million in international bonus money, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Mariners Trade Second Baseman Robinson Cano, Closer Edwin Diaz to Mets

KHADRICE ROLLINS
December 01, 2018
The Seattle Mariners traded All-Stars Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets.

In exchange for the second baseman, right-handed closer and $20 million, New York sent prospects Justin Dunn and Jarred Kelenic and the hefty contracts of Jay Bruce, Jason Vargas, Anthony Swarzak and Gerson Bautista to Seattle.

Cano has waived his no-trade clause and is expected to join the Mets Monday once a medical review is complete.

Cano was suspended 80 games last season for violating the joint drug agreement. His positive test was not for a performance-enhancing drug but instead for Furosemide, a diuretic to help people with heart, kidney and stroke issues. Cano was given the diuretic during the offseason to deal with a medical issue, but MLB determined he was using it to mask another drug. Cano was tested before and after the positive test and results came back clean.

In the 80 games he played this past year, he had 10 home runs, 50 RBIs and a slash line of .303/.374/.471.

Diaz was one of the best closers in baseball in 2018 and put together a career year, racking up an MLB-high 57 saves with a WHIP of 0.791. Those marks, along with his 1.96 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 73 1/3 innings pitched, were all career-best marks.

The Mets, now with major additions to their bullpen and middle infield, will look to challenge the defending NL East champion Atlanta Braves. New York finished fourth in the division last season, 13 games behind Atlanta at 77-85.

The Mariners are coming off an 89-73 campaign where they finished 14 games back of the Houston Astros for the AL West crown.

finally he's out of the NL West. top 5 hitter in the game. this is also a pretty prime LOLOLOL DBAGS GOT RUN ON imo

Yea, not a great return to say the least. I guess it's not the strongest market right now and he's a 1 year left on the contract player, but you'd still think they could have pulled a little bit better of a return.

I don't know anything about the three live bodies they got in return but that draft pick will be what, top 50 or so?

If the three have any value at all it isn't a terrible return for 1 year. If they keep him and he walks next year as a FA all they get is the draft pick.

Plus he showed signs of his bat slowing down for a long stretch last season. He's the type that typically doesn't age well.

That said, he'll likely find the St Louis fountain of youth and win 2-3 MVP's before finally retiring at 53 rewriting the "personal career numbers vs the Cincinnati Reds" record book along the way.

yeah i agree, teams have certainly made worse trades.

Weaver is a middle-to-back of the rotation type arm. still youngish, decent stuff, decent control, struggles a bit with lefties, nothing special. he'll be a lot more variant in the NL West in Chase & Coors where he's likely to get blown up a bit, and the Dodgers are a horrific matchup for him, but should do well in Petco. there is certainly upside here tho if he can pick up 1 more K per 9 and learn to spot the edges a bit more.

Kelly will help solidify ARI behind the plate..they've had a revolving door there for a few seasons without consistent production. he was slated to replace Yadi whenever he calls it, but he just signed an extension and the dude still somehow plays every day, so dumping your #2 prospect is risky but reasonable if they think Goldy is the one piece they need (i think he could be). he's young, only half a full season in the bigs so far, spread over 3 years, but good plate discipline and room to grow if he gets the work. meh power, basically a typical Catcher prospect. it's a decent get for them if he can handle the pitching staff

Andy Young will hopefully fill their 2B hole in the future. they've been playing Danny Descalso the last couple seasons, and he's been fine, but he's slowing down and is more on the platoon side of 30 now than the full time starter side. he'll likely head to AAA this year and get a look sometime mid-season if he does well.

the pick will be fine, but baseball is a different animal and there is a ton more variance with how these guys end up. this could end up a million different ways.

Goldy is an absolute monster tho. he did have a rough first half last year but turned it on and was an impossible out for like 3 months (similar to Votto a couple yrs ago..just hits .415 for 14 weeks and completely destroys you). guy is a damn good hitter. he might start a bit slower as he ages, and playing in STL will ding his numbers a bit (no Coors also, GABP instead), but he's got at least 5 elite years left in the tank and should command quite the contract. just an excellent ballplayer..quiet, confident, consistent and dangerous af. he will put up Rizzo-type numbers in GABP, even as a righty. total machine.

i LOLd bc i don't have a ton of respect for Weaver as a legit 2 just yet and i have immense respect for Goldy, and things are quiet still on the movement front and will be until winter meetings start up. ARI is now without 2 of the 3 most important players from their run the last few seasons (Corbin & Goldy) so they're comfortable with getting a respectable haul with upside. i think it's ok, and i don't know the dollar figures off hand so i'm sure this is prob the best they were going to get for now

In fact, St. Louis' new first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt, has a case for being the very best hitter in the NL. Among position players, no one in the NL has posted a better WAR since 2013 than Goldy. Overall, his 36.3 Wins Above Replacement ranks third among hitters, behind Mike Trout and Josh Donaldson (the latter of whom is switching leagues after spending his entire career in the AL).
