MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

Yep and they still have Porcello and Eovaldi as #3 and #4 in that rotation too. If they keep it together you could see 4 15-game winners next year. The AL East is still going to mostly suck outside of NYY.

I’ll be curious to see what they do with Eovaldi. Personally, I would love them to go after him. He owned the Yankees this season and that’s good enough for me. But he’s probably going to get a huge payday and after two TJ surgeries it’s a tough sell.
Price can opt out of his deal, too. I can almost see a scenario where the Sox are aggressive in pursuit of Kershaw. My chief concern is what is wrong with Sale’s shoulder.

The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner and the team agreed to extend the deadline on his opt-out decision by 40 hours until 1 p.m. PDT Friday.

The team made the announcement a couple hours before the initial 9 p.m. PDT deadline Thursday.

Kershaw can opt out of the last two years and $65 million of his contract to become a free agent for the first time in an 11-year big league career spent entirely with the Dodgers. They drafted him in 2006.

If he opts out, he could negotiate with any team, including the Dodgers.

He signed a $215 million, seven-year contract in January 2014 that calls for salaries of $32 million next year and $33 million in 2020.

Kershaw was 9-5 with a 2.73 ERA this season.

At 30, he remains one of baseball's premier pitchers. But the left-handed ace had two separate stints on the disabled list for the fourth time in five years this season, and his fastball velocity has decreased.

Despite all of his individual accolades, the seven-time All-Star has yet to win a World Series. The Dodgers lost in the Fall Classic for the second straight year, falling 4-1 to Boston on Sunday.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Willie McCovey, the sweet-swinging Hall of Famer nicknamed ''Stretch'' for his 6-foot-4 height and those long arms, died Wednesday. He was 80.

A first baseman and left fielder, McCovey was a .270 career hitter with 521 home runs and 1,555 RBIs in 22 major league seasons, 19 of them with the Giants. He also played for the Athletics and Padres.

McCovey batted .354 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs on the way to winning the 1959 NL Rookie of the Year award. The six-time All-Star also won the 1969 NL MVP and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986 after his first time on the ballot.

''You knew right away he wasn't an ordinary ballplayer,'' Hall of Famer Hank Aaron said, courtesy of the Hall of Fame. ''He was so strong, and he had the gift of knowing the strike zone. There's no telling how many home runs he would have hit if those knees weren't bothering him all the time and if he played in a park other than Candlestick.''

McCovey had been getting around in a wheelchair in recent years because he could no longer rely on his once-dependable legs, yet was still regularly seen at the ballpark in his private suite. McCovey had attended games at AT&T Park as recently as the season finale.

''I love him so much. It's a very sad day for me. We were very close,'' Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda said in a telephone interview. ''Willie McCovey was not only a great ballplayer but a great teammate. He didn't have any fear. He never complained.

''I remember one time in 1960 they sent him down to the minor leagues after being Rookie of the Year the year before. He didn't complain. He was very polite, he was very quiet. He was a great man, a great friend. I'm going to miss him so much. He didn't say a bad word about anybody.''

Harper turned down 10 yr, $300M?!? How much does he think he's going to get and who the eff is crazy enough to give it to him.

Just for giggles, I compared Harper's 2018 season to Adam Duvall's 2017......other than walks and the resulting big bump to OBP, the numbers were shockingly similar. I know Harper gets pitched around a lot more, but seriously? $30M per year is nuts.

The Yankmes don't need another strikeout heavy bat in that order. They really need another top-3 lineup guy (Machado) and a better option behind Sanchez as a backup who can take over when they move him to 1st base.

Of course they are talking about moving Harper to 1st base so.....yeah. With them trading the farm for Paxton last night I'd say Harper to NYY has a decent shot of happening now, even though I think they would be better served in going after Machado as a Shortstop and trading Gregorius once he comes back from Tommy John.

Nationals agree to deal with two-time all-star pitcher Patrick Corbin

Chelsea Janes
December 4 at 4:47 PM

The Washington Nationals landed the consensus prize of the starting pitching market Tuesday when they agreed to terms on a six-year deal with left-hander Patrick Corbin, according to a person familiar with the situation. The terms of the deal are not yet known, though Yahoo and others have reported it is worth $140 million and does include that ever-present Nationals' specialty — deferred money.

The deal fills Washington’s most glaring hole, providing a proven arm behind Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Corbin, an all-star in 2013 and 2018, will be 29 to start the 2019 season. He pitched to a 3.15 ERA and an 11-7 record with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, one of his best in the big leagues. Since he debuted with the Diamondbacks in 2012, Corbin has a 3.91 ERA and struck out 8.5 batters per nine innings.

The lefty relies on a fastball that sits in the low-90s and a whiff-inducing slider, and actually held right-handed hitters to a lower batting average against (.213) than lefties (.239). He is not a proven ace in the way Scherzer was when the Nationals signed him to his seven-year megadeal, or even in the way Strasburg was when they extended him for $175 million. But with a reported average annual value of $23 million, Washington is not paying Corbin Scherzer or Strasburg money.

The Nationals hosted Corbin for a visit last week, one that included dinner with General Manager Mike Rizzo and managing principal owner Mark Lerner, who made their case. Corbin grew up in Upstate New York as a devout New York Yankees fan, so many in the industry speculated the Yankees — who also hosted him — had an inside track to sign him. According to reports, they were unwilling to give Corbin a sixth year on a deal, which led many to believe the free-spending Philadelphia Phillies would sign him. Ultimately, the Nationals seized him, and in so doing checked off another box on their offseason checklist.

Since the end of the regular season, the Nationals have traded for reliever Kyle Barraclough, signed reliever Trevor Rosenthal, signed catcher Kurt Suzuki, traded for catcher Yan Gomes, and now signed starter Corbin. Their biggest needs entering this offseason were starting pitching, catching and bullpen depth. They have addressed all of them a week before the winter meetings begin — and long before Bryce Harper’s contract situation seems likely to reach its resolution.

The Corbin signing is somewhat out of character for the Nationals, who have signed only two players after those players received qualifying offers — Scherzer and Daniel Murphy. Because the Diamondbacks made Corbin the qualifying offer and he turned it down, the Nationals will forfeit their second- and fifth-round draft picks as well as $1 million in international bonus money, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Mariners Trade Second Baseman Robinson Cano, Closer Edwin Diaz to Mets

KHADRICE ROLLINS
December 01, 2018
The Seattle Mariners traded All-Stars Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets.

In exchange for the second baseman, right-handed closer and $20 million, New York sent prospects Justin Dunn and Jarred Kelenic and the hefty contracts of Jay Bruce, Jason Vargas, Anthony Swarzak and Gerson Bautista to Seattle.

Cano has waived his no-trade clause and is expected to join the Mets Monday once a medical review is complete.

Cano was suspended 80 games last season for violating the joint drug agreement. His positive test was not for a performance-enhancing drug but instead for Furosemide, a diuretic to help people with heart, kidney and stroke issues. Cano was given the diuretic during the offseason to deal with a medical issue, but MLB determined he was using it to mask another drug. Cano was tested before and after the positive test and results came back clean.

In the 80 games he played this past year, he had 10 home runs, 50 RBIs and a slash line of .303/.374/.471.

Diaz was one of the best closers in baseball in 2018 and put together a career year, racking up an MLB-high 57 saves with a WHIP of 0.791. Those marks, along with his 1.96 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 73 1/3 innings pitched, were all career-best marks.

The Mets, now with major additions to their bullpen and middle infield, will look to challenge the defending NL East champion Atlanta Braves. New York finished fourth in the division last season, 13 games behind Atlanta at 77-85.

The Mariners are coming off an 89-73 campaign where they finished 14 games back of the Houston Astros for the AL West crown.
