MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

Lmao. Machado said he was “trying to get over” Aguilar’s leg. By dragging your left foot on the ground and through the bag/his leg? THAT’S how you “get OVER” his leg? Does Machado ever listen to the shit he says? Watch the interview. It’s all funny to that fucking loser.

Mil would be preparing for the WS if they had any clutch in them. terrible AB's for long stretches of this series. left LA in it and they've taken advantage. had kershaw on the ropes yesterday with yelich-braun-the jesus coming up and couldn't do shit. Yelich has been invisible for most of the playoffs and its killing them. still not done but pretty close.

freaking red sox

Betts was clearly over the wall and into the stands to get that HR imo.

Wrong call on the field that replay couldn't overturn.

Caveat: I'm a Red Sox fan. I'm not sure that he's "clearly" over the wall. although, assuming that directly over the fence (as opposed to past it) is over the wall, which is my understanding of the rule, I think that he probably was. The TBS guys didn't catch it, but as either ESPN or MLBN guys pointed out (I was switching channels and forget which one I was watching), it takes a while for Mookie's body to hit the wall after initial fan contact with the glove. I think that he was over, but I don't think it's as clear cut as TBS made it out to be. Regardless, I agree that West's call was probably wrong and that there was no way to overturn it.

What I'd like to see is some discussion of the rule itself. To me, the game would be improved if the rule stated that so long as the player doesn't entirely leave the field of play, the fans can't actively interfere with his efforts to catch the ball no matter where his glove is (there would be judgment and replay as to what constitutes active interference). Ultimately, the game's better if we get to find out if Mookie would have caught that ball or not without the fans reaching in, so let's discourage fans from getting involved. On the flip side, I'd suggest a parallel change to say that if a player leaves the field of play entirely, he can't record an out by catching the ball. The first change discourages fans from screwing up potential great plays and the second protects the safety of both players and fans (I still remember Carlton Fisk diving three rows into the stands after foul balls in full catcher gear back in the day).

I don't know that you can police the fans really. What if some fat fuck just can't get out of the way?

To me it comes down to knowing if the fielder is "over the line", so to speak, well if they know every inch and at what speed anything happens on an MLB field anymore, why can't they have something that tells us if the fielder left the field of play or not?

easier than a new set of rules imo

Well, in this case they had a camera in what should have been the right place.. A big dude was just in the way of it. That said, I'm sure they could use some laser system or something like tennis does for line calls to tighten it up so your idea would surely be an improvement. As far as fat fucks not getting out of the way, I would do the rewrite to not make fans actively avoid the play, but just not actively go after the ball/glove/player and trust human judgment, with replay, on that. Not perfect, but better IMO.

<bitter Orioles fan> I'm glad they finally called fucking fan interference what may not have been a homer. Fuck Jeffery Maher! </bitter Orioles fan>

Maier. Oh, man....I was living near Baltimore when that play happened. A friend's dad was always a laidback guy, but man did he lose his shit over that play.
