MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

Poor Scrubs fans. :tibor:

Rockies played in Denver Sunday, LA Monday, Chicago Tuesday, and had enough left in the tank to win in 13. Helluva an effort. We'll see what they have left in the tank.

that is just nuts and precisely why I picked Chic. Just didnt think Colo had any juice left. well dammit if the Cubs (playing at home) didnt have any juice at all except for Baez. that dude is a baller

Well the As are going to try to Bullpen their way over the Yankees.....bold strategy

Starting RP Liam Hendricks who has a 4.13 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in only 24IP on the season :ohbrother:

Edwin Jackson is the only starting pitcher on the A's wild-card roster,

Looked up the A's starting pitchers and I've no idea how they won 97 games. Even if they somehow pulled this game out, they'd get hammered in a series.

The Rays won 90 games playing in the East. They'd have a better shot in the postseason, starting with 21 game winner Ian Snell.

Lowest payroll in MLB and Beane fields another playoff team.

Meanwhile Vottina and the 24 gimps are deep into their offseason routines.

You should be able to DFA owners and GM's.

Turns out the Rays had the lowest payroll. How they won 90 games playing in the same division as Boston and the Yanks was remarkable.

Oakland was 28th, though. The team across the bay from them, the Giants, had the second highest payroll and did jack shit with it.

Traded Archer too, who was pretty solid all season (including with the Buccos). That Rays win total simply amazes me.

Melvin's plan was cute, but if you're going to have Edwin Jackson as your only SP on the roster tonight then go ahead and start him. You may have gotten 4 decent innings out of him instead of having to bring your closer in the game in the 6th.

Then again, if you don't score I guess it doesn't really matter.

If I was the A's I would have started Mike Fiers. But I get it if you're going to do something different than start Mike Fiers. He's obviously not ideal to start in a 1 game playoff. Especially if you have a good bullpen.

My question/problem is why are you having Hendriks and Rodney---your 2 worst pitchers---pitch against the Yankees best hitters. And it's not like there was nothing they could have done to avoid it---Hendriks pitched the top of the 1st and they brought in Rodney with the top hitters coming up too.

I like these managers and teams working around the idea of "bullpen" games.

It needs to get ironed out obviously but I think they are fundamentally on to something.

NL Wild Card = Cubs over Rockies

NLDS = Cubs over Brewers
= Braves over Dodgers

NLCS = Cubs over Braves

AL Wild Card = Athletics over Yankees

ALDS = Indians over Astros
= Red Sox over Athletics

ALCS = Red Sox over Indians

WS = Red Sox over Cubs

Now the WS I want to see is Indians over Brewers

lol i suck at this

It's one of those things that if it works you look like a genius. But it requires several fireballers and none of them can implode or it foils the plan. Good luck trying to predict which one of them will have the off night.

Give me Sale, Scherzer, an average starter, and 2 or 3 flamethrowers behind them. Let's see that bullpen beat me in a 7 game series.

I see it a lot at the youth travel level. The biggest mistake I see them making is being strict to a schedule and pulling a hot pitcher. Yanking a guy who doesn't have it that day isn't a problem.

The top shelf starter is probably the best option but it's like moneyball again, you can possibly achieve similar production from a less expensive/more available source.

It, ostensibly, defeats the problem of top shelf pitching scarcity.

Wade Miley is available on regular rest, his ERA this season is 2.57, 38% of his outings were quality starts. Is he starting game one? Nope. The Brewers are making it a bull pen game. Seems incredibly stupid to me because even if you win it you're burning through the strength of your pitching staff early in the playoffs. This isn't an elimination game.

Remember when the Tribe almost beat the Cubs? Recall how dominant Miller was early in the playoffs, only to run out of gas in the biggest series of the year. Francona was down a starter so some of that was necessity, but he also fell in love with his security blanket. Miller hasn't been the same since, by the way.

Stick to your routines that got you here. This isn't the time to experiment. The advantage Milwaukee has is Colorado had to use their 2 best SPs just to get here, but if the Rockies can split the first two I like their chances.
