NEW YORK (AP) -- Less than 24 hours after helping the Chicago White Sox win their first World Series since 1917, AL championship series MVP Paul Konerko was among 62 players who filed for free agency Thursday.
Konerko, who hit .283 with 40 homers and 100 RBIs during the regular season, is one of the top hitters available on the market. Approximately 200 players are eligible to file by the Nov. 10 deadline, and free agents can start discussing contract terms with all teams the following day.
Philadelphia Phillies closer Billy Wagner and Los Angeles Angels catcher Bengie Molina also filed, as did Boston first baseman Kevin Millar and third baseman Bill Mueller. They were joined by Florida pitcher A.J. Burnett and Chicago Cubs outfielder Jeromy Burnitz.
San Francisco moved to keep two players from becoming eligible, exercising right-hander Jason Schmidt's $10 million option and outfielder Randy Winn's $5 million option.
In addition, the Giants announced that three 2006 options had been exercised in which the decisions were up to players: second baseman Ray Durham ($7 million), outfielder Moises Alou ($4 million) and right-handed reliever LaTroy Hawkins ($3.5 million).
The New York Mets declined Danny Graves' $5 million option and elected to pay the reliever a $500,000 buyout.
Colorado agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Mike DeJean, a deal that includes a mutual option for 2007. After giving general manager Jim Bowden a six-month contract extension, the Washington Nationals agreed to one-year contracts with infielder Damian Jackson, who elected for free agency and left the San Diego Padres on Oct. 14, and Bernie Castro, who left the Baltimore Orioles.

CLEVELAND - The Indians avoided arbitration with infielder Ramon Vazquez on Friday, signing him to a one-year contract for 2006.
The Indians traded infielder Alex Cora to Boston on July 7 for Vazquez, who hit .250 in 12 games. The 29-year-old has a career .258 average for Seattle, San Diego, Boston and Cleveland.
The move leaves the Indians with three arbitration-eligible players — outfielder Coco Crisp, pitcher David Riske and first baseman Ben Broussard. Crisp is not eligible for free agency.
Four Indians have filed for free agency — pitchers Kevin Millwood, Bob Wickman, Bobby Howry and Scott Elarton, outfielder Juan Gonzalez and utilityman Jose Hernandez. Pitcher Scott Sauerbeck also is eligible for free agency. The team is expected to exercise its 2006 contract option on second baseman Ronnie Belliard within the next two weeks.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Paul Konerko decided to stay with the World Series champion Chicago White Sox, agreeing Wednesday to a $60 million, five-year contract.
The first baseman led the White Sox with 40 homers and 100 RBIs last season, hitting .283. He was MVP of the AL championship series win over the Los Angeles Angels after hitting two homers and seven RBIs. He had a go-ahead grand slam in Game 2 of the World Series sweep over Houston, the first Series title for the White Sox since 1917.
A two-time All-Star, Konerko had an $8.75 million base salary last season, then became a free agent after the Series. Last offseason, Chicago decided not to discuss an extension. His new deal calls for him to receive $12 million annually. Chicago agreed to a limited no-trade clause that states he can't be dealt to six specified teams without his permission. Konerko also was courted by the Angels and the Baltimore Orioles.
