Chuck Liddell Retires, Named UFC Vice President of Business Development

UFC president Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, at Wednesday’s UFC 125 prefight press conference, announced the official retirement of former UFC light heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell.

Perhaps a little more of a surprise was that they also named Liddell to the promotion’s executive staff. Instead of UFC superstar, Liddell will now be known as UFC Vice President of Business Development, on par with the rest of the promotion’s executive staff.

Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for a full report on Liddell’s retirement shortly.
Good for Chuck...glad to see him remaining a part of the UFC

Bout time he retired...he was just getting worked in the octagon the past few years. Now in his prime he was a heck of a fighter. Glad to see him still being part of the sport, and a big part at that.

GSP-Shields official for UFC 129

LAS VEGAS – UFC president Dana White has often predicted that the company’s biggest show will be in Toronto on April 30 at UFC 129.

He announced Saturday that Georges St. Pierre would defend the UFC welterweight title against Jake Shields in the main event of that show. Former light heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Lyoto Machida are expected to meet in the co-main event.

Shields is the only man standing among the contenders at welterweight after St. Pierre has rolled through the division. There had been talk of him moving up to middleweight to challenge champion Anderson Silva, but that bout will not be contingent upon St. Pierre getting past Shields.

St. Pierre is currently ranked No. 1 in the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound Top 10 poll and Shields is ranked No. 9.

Couture, 47, had been considering retiring since less-than-significant fights against Mark Coleman and boxer James Toney his last two times out. But by getting the match with Machida, as he requested, he’ll continue his career.

Strikeforce confirmed their single-elimination heavyweight tournament yesterday. Pretty stacked tourney - it's just too bad the 4 best fighters are on the same side of the bracket. Strikeforce said timing issues of when fighters would be available dictated the misaligned bracket.

Feb. 12th first round fights:
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio Silva
Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov

March 5th first round fights - at Nationwide Arena in Columbus:
Brett Rogers vs. Josh Barnett (winner faces Arlovski or Kharitonov)
Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum (winner faces Fedor or Silva)

I'm pumped for this. Overeem/fedor is a dream matchup . Hopefully it works out that way.

Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos Named Coaches for The Ultimate Fighter 13

The suspense is finally over for the “Ultimate Fighter” season 13 as former champion Brock Lesnar and top contender Junior Dos Santos have been tapped as coaches for the reality show.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement during a media conference call on Tuesday.

Lesnar’s appearance on the “Ultimate Fighter” could bring the biggest ratings ever for the long running Spike TV show, as he has already been tagged as the largest pay-per-view draw in the UFC.

The former heavyweight champion has been out of sight since his UFC 121 loss to current title holder Cain Velasquez in October.

Opposing Lesnar on the show and eventually a fight will be Junior Dos Santos, who comes into the show as an undefeated contender in the UFC.

Contd....

Damn fedor just lost again. Hinting at retirement post fight.

Looked like Fedor was at least 50 pounds lighter at fight time. I still think Fedor is one of the pound-for-pound best, but fighting someone who has coordination and skill at 285 pounds was too much to overcome. His eye just completely closed up like something I've never seen from those giant fists. And Silva showed the most respect that I have ever seen to a fighter he just defeated - absolute class.

On a different note, I would be interested in learning what effect, if any, gigantism/acromegaly has on Silva's ability to fight and absorb punishment. By definition, it's caused by the natural overproduction of HGH. Silva's hands and chin are huge. Does the growth of facial bone provide additional protection from knockouts? Fedor landed some bombs on him in the first round and he just took them.

As a heads-up, I would like to conduct a BP poll regarding the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in MMA. I have been PMing with LordJeffBuck since he does such a great job with the BP awards for college football every year, but would appreciate any advice from others as well.

What I have in mind is contacting the BP members who most frequently comment in this thread and the individual MMA event threads, and ask everyone to provide your list, 1 through 10, in order, with 10 points for every first place vote, 9 points for every second place vote, etc. I would also indicate the number of 1st place votes in parentheses. Depending on the feedback and participation, I think it would be fun to have a poll quarterly, every 3 months or so, to keep it up to date. I will also dedicate an individual thread to it when the time comes, but probably in the "Other Professional Sports" section.

If you are interested in participating in this type of poll or have any advice, please feel free to reply in this thread or by PM. I think it would be fun to do and would require a minimal amount of work to participate.
