Post Game Notes
• In his last tune-up prior to The Game, QB Kyle McCord was adequate but not great: 20/30, 212 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, sack. All season long, Buckeye fans have been trying to come up with an appropriate comparison for McCord, with the most common candidate being Craig Krenzel. After watching McCord for eleven games, I can't help thinking that he's Todd Boeckman – a quarterback who was good enough to lead Ohio State to the brink of a national championship as a junior in 2007, but who was quickly replaced by a younger better player (Terrelle Pryor) the following season despite 10,000 to 1 odds against that move. McCord can build his legacy – and begin to make his case to remain the starter in 2024 – by beating The Cheaters Up North next week.
• Yes, Marvin Harrison Jr (3 receptions, 30 yards, TD) is the best player in college football, but the Buckeye offense has an extra dimension when TreVeyon Henderson is healthy. Yesterday, Henderson had 15 carries for 146 yards (9.7 average) and 2 touchdowns, and added 2 receptions for 26 yards. In eight games this season, Henderson has 134 touches for 1,004 yards (7.5 average) and 10 touchdowns, with 4 of those scores being from 30+ yards.
• Henderson had a touchdown run of 75 yards, the longest touchdown of his Buckeye career. It was Henderson's fifth touchdown of 50+ yards. Only 11 other Buckeyes have five or more touchdowns of 50+ yards, and the list is impressive: Joey Galloway (5); Michael Wiley (5); Beanie Wells (5); J.K. Dobbins (5); Jeff Graham (6); David Boston (6); Parris Campbell (6); Devin Smith (7); Braxton Miller (8); Ezekiel Elliott (8); Ted Ginn Jr (16).
• The Buckeyes played an uninspiring first half, outgaining the Golden Gophers 232 yards to 94 yards but leading only 13-0. On the first play of the second half, Henderson ripped off his 75-yard touchdown run. The next play was a strip sack which led to a short-field touchdown. With 13:53 left in the third quarter, Ohio State led 27-0 and the game was essentially over.
• The Ohio State defense held Minnesota to 159 total yards on 48 plays, for an average of 3.3 yards per play. Jack Sawyer had a standout performance, with 6 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, a sack, and a forced fumble. JT Tuimoloau nearly scored on a fumble recovery (he came up 6 yards short after a 16-yard return) and Jordan Hancock nearly scored on an interception (he came up 14 yards short after a 40-yard return).
• For the season, the Buckeye defense has surrendered just 102 points (9.3 per game) and 2,782 yards (252.9 per game; 4.0 per play).
• Jayden Fielding was a perfect 3 for 3 on field goal attempts, including a career long from 47 yards.
• Trailing 37-0 with 6:43 left in the game, Minnesota kicked a 54-yard field goal to spoil the shut out. Row, row, row your boat....
• Time to savor the Hate.
