TAMPA, Fla. -- Minnesota Twins outfielder Denard Span hit a foul ball that struck his mother in the chest in the first inning of Wednesday's spring training game against the New York Yankees.
Wanda Wilson was sitting in the box seats near the third-base dugout, among 20 of Span's family and friends, when her son, leading off the game, hit a foul liner off Yankees starter Phil Hughes.
When the ball landed in the stands, Span looked up from the batter's box, realized what had happened and ran over to be with his mother.
Span stayed near while paramedics treated her. The game was delayed for a few minutes before Wilson was helped to her feet and walked out of the stands under her own power to be taken for first aid.
Span returned to his at-bat with the count 3-2 and struck out looking on the next pitch.
Wilson was back in the seats by the bottom of the first inning, but was later taken to a hospital. Span left the game to accompany her to the hospital.
