Prosecutor says dog fighting investigation "moving forward"

HANK KURZ Jr.

Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va. - The prosecutor in the investigation of a possible dog fighting operation at a house owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is confident charges will be brought. He can't yet say who will be charged.
"We are moving forward," Surry County Commonwealth attorney Gerald Poindexter said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Friday. He declined to set a timetable for when evidence in the case would be ready to present to a grand jury.
Police raided the home as part of a drug investigation on April 25. They seized 66 dogs, 55 of them pit bulls, and equipment that could be associated with dog fighting.

going from bad to worse....link

He arrived at the hotel room, where our cameras were set up, in a T-shirt and jeans. "I'm nervous," he said, surveying our lights and camera equipment. "I've never done anything like this before."
Our confidential source said he's been involved in dog fighting for more than 30 years. He has trained and fought -- by his estimation -- about 2,000 pit bulls and was poised to tell "Outside the Lines" about the time in 2000 when his dog squared off against a dog owned by someone he referred to as one of the "heavyweights" of the dog fighting world: Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.
"He's a pit bull fighter," the source said of Vick. "He's one of the ones that they call 'the big boys': that's who bets a large dollar. And they have the money to bet large money. As I'm talking about large money -- $30,000 to $40,000 -- even higher. He's one of the heavyweights."......cont.

This is all happening back in 2000 right? So the obvious question is how was Vick a "heavyweight" betting 30-40K a fight while he was still at VT? He wasn't drafted until 2001 right? Hmmmm.....

I'm thinking ATL might be regretting that Schaub trade right about now with only Harrington waiting in the wings.

I believe there was a lot of talk about improper benefits for D.Hall as an amateur at VT.

Once again it doesnt make any sense to me...

First off why go to ESPN and not the police...Why throw all the facts out in the open...If he says that he and Vick threw 5 grand on the match and Vicks dog died, don't you think Vick is going to know who it is...Have a couple guys go snitch on this guy and then he is gone...

It is common sense to me, that this is stupid...

Once again I am not saying that Vick wasnt involved, but this looks like a nother thing of people grasping at straws...

First what does the guy have to gain, by doing the interview, it is his ass as well unless of course he does it in court, but he did not, if all is true, and he ratted on Vick in the public I am sure Vick could just as easily call for him to be indicted just as well, since he isnt witness protection or anything like that...

Keeping all feeling for Vick out of this and what you want to belive and what not, but does the decision of this guy to do an interview on ESPN, and to give facts that make him easily indentifiable seem just plain stupid to anyone else???

Virginia Tech has the "Hookie Handshake". I witnessed this first hand involving Deangelo Hall when I was hanging with a friend who was on the team.

From the article:Thoughts, joe?

Now it is really getting sketchy...I missed that part...

He has been bringing guys in for doing the exact same thing he is doing...Now they have facts on him, they know who he is...So Vick could say hey, remember your buddy that got put away b/c of some guy, well why don't you testify to discredit this witness, and put him at events, and convict him...

I understand that money is given out all over the place at colleges, but for a college athlete to have 5000 to throw down on a dog fight seems a little extreme to me...I can understand cars, and gifts, but not straight cash of upwards of round 10,000 or more dollars considering that if he was involved as much as this guy is making it out to be, if he losses two matches then he is down that much...It could quickly escalate to upwards of 20,000 - 30,00 dollars and for a college athlete, who if he was putting that much money on this, I am not thinking this is his first time in 2000, b/c I would think that would be experienced guys that would be doing this...

Also from the sounds of this, this would be strong evidence, and you would think that he could of came after Vick moreso than some other people that no one knows about since he has seen Vick and been around this for 7 years...Why wait till it is out in the news, why not before hand, why not keep it quiet until the trial, why do the interview...It just doesnt make sense to me...

I would assume he made a deal.

How does that discredit the witness? From the sounds of it, he's been working with the feds... and so they know what he's done.

I'd think ESPN would pay for this bombshell...

I understand that, but he blew his cover...If someone is working undercover and striking deals with the feds or whoever they don't blow their cover for a story for ESPN...Also if he has all this info and the like to go on a show about it, isnt it enough to arrest him?

How does that discredit the witness? From the sounds of it, he's been working with the feds... and so they know what he's done.

He very well could be, but what it does do is by being able to indentify this guy it gives Vick and his attorneys a way to make a case to discredit the things this guy is saying, by having guys that can indentify this guy as being at the same fights he says Vick was at, but these guys saying that he was not there, therefore making it he said she said hog wash, and Vick could find more guys, outnumbering the one guys, therefore discrediting his testimony, unless of course he has tapes, pictures, the like...

I'd think ESPN would pay for this bombshell...

And there we have, a way for ESPN to get viewers...IMO it is all abunch of he said she said stuff, and people are eating it up so ESPN is willing to take a leap of faith and put this guy on tv...

I understand it is hard to know if true considering that the public doesnt know who this guy is, but if the attorneys and the likes figure out, they will be able to find out about what this guys history is and what type and how many people he has been able to put away from his testimony...

Like I have said they are making this case, even if Vick is guilty to easy for his attorneys to win...Any good attorney is sleeping 23 hours and working 1 on this case, as they are laying everything out there on the table for them to be able to break apart...

Also if he has been working for the feds, I am sure they wouldnt want him talking to ESPN...

In the face of all of this, do you still believe he's innocent, 40?

How is his cover blown? His whisper campaign is blown, but not his identity.

Well people getting busted regularly would make people suspicious too. Is he undercover or just ratting out past felonies?

How are they going to identify him?

How are they going to come forward without implicating themselves?

And they may also learn that Vick is completely guilty, but may not be able to legally nail him for it.

exactly.

Maybe they aren't using him anymore.

I am almost positive that he will not be indicted on charges, unless more evidence that the stuff that we have heard of comes to forefront...

I feel that he had knowledge of what was going on, and he might have even been involved, but there is no way to know, and if he is never indicted, and there are suppossed to be all these sources, then it looks like they were making the whole thing up to try and tie Vick to this what reason do I or anyone else have to believe that he was involved...BTW they are still working on convicting anyone on this not just Vick...

How is his cover blown? His whisper campaign is blown, but not his identity.

He was putting facts out there about his dog killing Vick's...If true and not a lie for tv then Vick would obviously be able to recall who it was, and people would then know who the snitch was...

Well people getting busted regularly would make people suspicious too. Is he undercover or just ratting out past felonies?
How are they going to identify him?

He could be doing it in different states etc...Don't know but if he is undercover and it was not the feds that uncovered the dogs it was the local police and they were there on suspicion of drugs, and that is how they found the dogs, I have a hard time believing that it goes this deep...

As for identifying him he gave out facts as I stated above that Vick should be able to identify him by...

How are they going to come forward without implicating themselves?

This is a good question, but some of these people may be willing to take the fall for Vick, obviously if there is need to do this then Vick is guilty and they are trying to cover him up, and there is already illegal things, benefits going on and there is no reason, why they wouldnt do more to cover him up...If they are false aquistions then there is no reason to cover it up, and they won't need to discredit him unless, he is giving false statements and they are able to discredit them...

This guy is going to have to give time and place, and yadda yadda of the fight, so then you go the owner of the house where the fight was held and he comes in question, if the owner is a dogfighter and knows he is already ratting guys out, then he is going to say that none of this happened, and it becomes he said she said once again...

And they may also learn that Vick is completely guilty, but may not be able to legally nail him for it.

exactly.

If they know this then shouldnt they be more worried about trying to find evidence that will nail him instead of putting false things in the papers and having people go on ESPN...This is the thing that makes it look out of wack to me...

Maybe they aren't using him anymore.

They might not be using him, but I am sure they wouldnt want a guy like this to have his name and identity out there...That is the whole point of witness protection...
