The Miami quarterback room received a significant lift ahead of the 2024 season when prized transfer Cameron Ward announced his decision to withdraw from the NFL Draft and spend his final year of eligibility with the Hurricanes. The former Washington State and Incarnate Word standout instantly projects as the team’s starter upon landing in Coral Gables as the No. 13 player in the 2024 transfer cycle.

Ward’s path to Miami was anything but straightforward, though, and returning backup Jacurri Brown opened up about the arrival of his new position mate. Brown hinted towards Ward’s significant NIL package and the incentives that came with committing to the Hurricanes.

"I hear the details of it, I'm like, 'Yeah, if it was that, then I'm definitely going to come back for another year,'" Brown said on the Momentum Podcast. "It ain't nothing against him. If the number was that, for another year, yeah, I'm going to come back and I'm going to retool my s--t. And at the end of the day, it's up to him."

Ward initially declared for the NFL Draft but reversed course in mid-January, choosing instead to play one more year of college football at his third school in four years. He ranks as the No. 4 signal-caller in the transfer portal and was among the top targets at any position from the day he departed from Washington State.

"And whoever's advising him — I don't know," said Brown. "It's kind of weird to think about, because you told him to declare for the draft, but I think it was a tactic for bread. Kind of like how Tyler (Van Dyke) was like (in 2023), 'Oh, I'm going to 'Bama if y'all don't (pay me).' So it's smart, but at the same time, you think — me, I'm about loyalty and relationships. So if you're trying to pump fake me, you don't really want to be here. I want people that want to be here for real."

"He's got a job to do, fam," Brown said of Cristobal. "At the end of the day, if we don't perform, we don't win, he's getting fired. I'm still going to have a scholarship somewhere. It's on him. He's got a family to feed. So if that's what he feels about going about it, then that's just how he feels. Does the dude owe me an explanation? No, but, as far as the relationship, it would be cool to have one, yeah. But at the end of the day, he doesn't really owe me anything. He gave me an opportunity to come compete."

Just sayin': Sounds like Brown isn't real happy about the deal that Da U gave Ward.

I can't blame him. And honestly this is why Day didn't want to run OSU in this manner, where you bring in players and pay them more than the current players. It's going to be interesting if Ward doesn't play up to his paycheck, players talk. Don't let Ward have a multiple turnover game, and Brown is watching from the sideline pissed. That can easily divide a locker room...
