Miami (FL) Hurricanes (1926-2003)

SKULL SESSION: JALIN MARSHALL RECALLS HIS ROUGH WELCOME TO THE TEAM, OHIO STATE BROKE MIAMI, AND KEVIN WARREN'S HAD A WILD FIRST FEW MONTHS

RIP IN PEACE, MIAMI.
Watching ESPN's replay of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, I had one prominent takeaway: Ohio State broke Miami forever. The Hurricanes have never recovered, and the future ain't looking too bright, either.

'The U' hasn't been the same

The Hurricanes are 96-70 overall and 57-47 in ACC play the past 13 seasons. Every attempt to restore the aura of “The U” has been side-tracked by coaching changes. Shannon, Al Golden, Mark Richt and now Manny Diaz have taken turns at the helm. A scandal involving former booster Nevin Shapiro in 2011 also tugged at the program, resulting in NCAA probation and a two-year self-imposed bowl ban in 2011-12.

Richt did lead Miami to the ACC championship game in 2017, but the Hurricanes lost 38-3 to Clemson and the coach retired after the following season.

Diaz's first year ended in a 6-7 record and a 14-0 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl. Miami is banking on new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee and transfer quarterback D'Eriq King to reverse the fortunes of a program that is still searching for its first ACC title heading into the 2020 season.

It's been a different story at Ohio State.

It's hilarious that both teams faced extremely similar disciplinary actions in the 2011 season and Ohio State went ahead and won a national title three years later while Miami went 6-7 culminating in a riveting loss in the Independence Bowl.

I've never seen a program fall harder or faster than The U, but it's important to remember they didn't just fall – they were pushed.

King beat out the likes of redshirt juniors N’Kosi Perry and Tate Martell, redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha and true freshman early enrollee Tyler Van Dyke for the job. All eyes will now turn to Perry and, especially, Martell to see if either — or both — enter the transfer portal.

He didn't have to beat out much...

Miami fans will never get over the fact that Coach Tressel took their soul and put an absolute halt to their wanna be dynasty:jt:. That program has never been the same. They went to what Bama is now(and possibly at times seemed superior talent wise) to a program that has trouble beating the likes of UVA, BC and Duke yearly.

UH quarterback D'Eriq King enters transfer portal after sitting out in middle of season

As recently as last week, Holgorsen and those close to him felt confident King would be back. Houston began spring classes on Monday, and King had submitted scholarship paperwork to attend school this semester, a source told ESPN, but such paperwork is nonbinding.

On Sept. 24, D'Eriq King said: "I'm staying here. I'm here. If I wanted to leave Houston and go somewhere else, I could have. I think me being here is what I want to do and it's the best opportunity for me. I don't think anybody will reach out to me. Even if they do, they should know I'm staying here."

He went on to say that day he "never thought about transferring," at that point.

King's father, Eric, told ESPN on Sept. 23 that while returning to Houston was "absolutely" a possibility, the quarterback and his family would evaluate all their options.

Just sayin': I kind of wonder what was going on with King, Holgorsen, and the Houston Cougars last season. Did King want to leave all along to play for a Power 5 school? Did some irreconcilable conflict between King and Holgorsen develop? Did Miami make King (and his family) an offer (i.e. $$$) they couldn't refuse?

Inquiring minds want to know.....
