Miami football player shot, killed

University of Miami defensive end Bryan Pata was shot and killed Tuesday night, shortly after leaving the practice field, school officials said.
The circumstances around Pata's death were not immediately clear, and Miami-Dade police refused to release specific information about what happened. A formal announcement was expected from the university later Tuesday.
"Right now, we're just gathering ourselves and just trying to pull ourselves together," Miami athletic director Paul Dee said.
Pata, a graduate of Miami Central, was in his fourth year with the Hurricanes. He appeared in 41 games, making 23 starts, and was expected to be selected in next spring's NFL draft.
It was at least the fourth time that tragedy involving a player has struck the Hurricanes in recent years.
In April 1996, reserve linebacker and Miami native Marlin Barnes was murdered in a campus apartment. In 2003, former Miami safety Al Blades was killed in a car accident, about a year after former Miami linebacker Chris Campbell ? who just had completed his eligibility with the Hurricanes ? also died in a crash.
Pata's death was the second incident involving guns this season for the Hurricanes.
In July, reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard before an early morning workout. Cooper was not seriously injured. Brandon Meriweather, one of Cooper's teammates and roommates, returned fire at Cooper's assailant, taking three shots that apparently missed, police said.
Several Miami players, including Pata, said that incident was a robbery attempt and cautioned other teammates to always be aware of their surroundings.
"We're targets because we play for the University of Miami. ... These guys, they know who we are," Miami linebacker Jon Beason said shortly after the Cooper shooting.
That incident prompted Miami coach Larry Coker to say he did not want his players to have guns, even if they possessed them legally.

as everyone knows i am i miami fan and this hits me extremely hard... even though i didn't know his... following his career the way that i have and they way that i do with all the other canes, it almost feels like i knew him and this is a really hard time for me and the rest of the miami nation... the friends, family, fans, teammates, coaches... right now i could care less how many losses we have, when you lose someone like bryan or anyone for that matter its tough... my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends... god bless and rest in peace...

Slain 'Canes player to receive degree

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Slain Miami Hurricanes football player Bryan Pata will receive a posthumous degree from university president Donna Shalala during commencement exercises on campus Friday.

Pata's family is expected to attend the ceremony to receive his degree.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Six months after Miami Hurricanes football player Bryan Pata was murdered, the University of Miami still cheers for him.


Pata received a posthumous degree from university President Donna Shalala at commencement exercises Friday.

Shalala presented the degree to two members of Pata's family, who held hands as they walked across the stage while the audience applauded.
"His warm, wide smile and his incredibly competitive spirit will be remembered by all who knew him," an announcer told the crowd.

Pata's family gets $2 million settlement

MIAMI (AP) ? The family of slain Miami Hurricanes player Bryan Pata will get $2 million from the insurance companies of the apartment complex where he was murdered, a family attorney said.

Pata was fatally shot outside The Colony Apartment in Kendall on Nov. 7. The apartment complex did not provide the 24-hour security it had advertised and neglected to maintain safety lighting, said the family's attorney, Andrew Haggard.

"It was totally dark," Haggard said Tuesday. "An overhead light was obscured by bushes and trees. He had to park in front of a Dumpster. Anybody could hide behind the Dumpster and not be detected."
