Metaverse Madness Megathread

In seriousness it seems the more technically advanced the Internet gets, the worse it gets.

I have a slightly different take. "The more mainstream it gets, the worse it gets."
Back in the day, we had irc chats... it could get a little weird but no different than groupchats i see today.
Then HS bullying came with AIM, myspace, facebook, insta, and on tiktok. Getting progressively worse each time.
Boomers got on fb so they could stay in touch when their millenial kids left home. And a couple years later it turned into a boomer /pol cesspit with all the usual L takes by boomers.

The technology didn't get better from mIRC to Tiktok. It just became more distributed and "hip" in the parlance of my parents.
Kids use it to waste time and do stupid things. Parents, esp single moms, use it as a substitute for parenting. Boomers use it as an outlet to turn every day into bad /pol, where before we only had to suffer through Thanksgiving rants once a year.

As always, I blame Steve Jobs for making his slave produced iphones trendy.
Nobody cared when it was Windows and Android based. The technology was too esoteric for the muggles to participate.

And there, ive turned into the weird Thanksgiving uncle rant. It's come full circle.

That is a great point. I will supplement by noting that advancements have led to increased accessibility, as it does with all technologies (cars, flying, etc).

And the more advanced and easy to make and distribute something becomes, the easier it becomes for more stupid people to get their hands on it, and the more stupid shit is done with the technology.

Some of it is also just awareness. Anyone whose perused 4ch in the last 10 years, knows they were generating/editing explicit images of their classmates for a long long time.
But the girls and parents weren't aware of this depraved behavior. It was hidden in a dark and dirty corner of the internet.
Now with AI art sites offering their services for nothing, in order to be the one that gets traction / market share, it's available to everyone with a few clicks.
That means it's not just easy to access, but they're being shared all across social media.
I forgot to even mention how fucked up the idea of snapchat even is. It gives girls a false sense of security that they can send explicit photos privately, and it prevents authority figures from knowing what exactly happened after the fact.
For example, there's numerous reports of the Idaho 4 murders being widely discussed by Greek community on Snapchat around 8am that morning... 4 hours before 911 was called.
But now it's just rumor / testimony from witnesses. Who started those chats? Why did they talk on socials but not call 911? A critical piece of evidence for the timeline was wiped out the same day.
