Men's Basketball Buckeye Tidbits 2007-08 Season

very favorable article about the Buckeyes here

Nice article. It is great to see the reloading and education of your younger guys. Our young team was helped by our early losses, and they have responded to those lessons handed out by teams like the Buckeyes to scrap for the lead in the SEC East.

It looks like we might get to dance after all, if they can survive the post-Vandy big head inflate ego week that will follow. If they do, and get to dance as a 16 or 15, I hope that we get a chance to renew our rivalry. Playing a national power such as tOSU is rewarding no matter what the result.

Both programs have a huge upside next year, and might surprise people this year as well. I suspect both of us are in the category of "teams low seeds don't want to face."

Just a couple stats worth noting...

Butler 703 minutes thru 20 games...Only 2 guys in the conference averaging more minutes/game and they play for Iowa and NW...

Lighty 640 minutes thru 20 games...

Neitzel 625 thru 20 games...

Gordon and White 591 thru 18 games...

Moore 569 thru 20 games...

Krabbenhoft 599 thru 19 games...

We are tied for 94th in the country in rebounding...

We are 97th in the country in fg %...

Even with Butler's outrageous ft % we are not in the top 100 in the country as a team...:(

We are also not in the top 100 in 3 pt % as we are only shooting 35%...:(

We are 3rd in the conference in team defense only giving up 60.6pts/game...

We are 1st in the conference in overall fg% defense at 37%...

Same with 3 pt % defense at 29.4% :yow1:

We are last in the conference in terms of letting other teams getting rebounds...:(

Teams are averaging 13.7 To's/game vs us...

KK second in the league in blocks/game...He has really stepped up as of late...

O is 7th in the league in blocks/game...

Turner is tied for 5th in the conference in To's/game at 2.6/game...

Butler is shooting better from 3 pt range than overall fg %...

Butler is leading the league in assists at 6.2/game...

Just thought some of these stats were interesting and kinda show where we are at...

We are a defensive minded team that can't rebound and don't shoot the ball that well...

If we could ever sure up the rebounding on the defensive end of the court and continue to keep teams shooting the percentages that they are then we will be a very tough team to beat...But we also need to find ways to score as well...

We also need to find a way to cut Butler's and Lighty's minutes some or the are going to wear down...Also Turner as his minutes are really increasing as of the past 4 or 5 games...

I think Turner's and Lighty's minutes will be reduced a little as JD takes a few minutes away. Hopefully, the next three games will help us reduce Turner and Lighty's time. Not sure about Butler because without him we are lost on offense. I just wish Hill would be able to direct our offense a little better.

Where does Butler stand in the country as far as FT%. I know he was #1 up until Saturday but missing those 2 free throws probably dropped him.

Ohio State men's basketball team forcing misses with zone defense but missing rebounds

Tuesday, January 29, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- There's one certain solution to Ohio State's problem with allowing offensive rebounds - don't give up so many missed shots.
Let the opponent make it the first time, and those second chances will vanish.
One constant through the Buckeyes' 14-6 start in men's college basketball this year has been an effective zone defense applied out of necessity by traditional man-to-man coach Thad Matta.

OSU on road to greatness?
Buckeyes face winnable Big Ten games this week

COLUMBUS How Ohio State fares in hostile environments likely will determine the Buckeyes' fate in the Big Ten men's basketball race.

Protecting home has been no problem. Only North Carolina, ranked No. 1 at the time, has beaten Ohio State at Value City Arena this season.

However, there is no doubt the Buckeyes must turn things around on the road this week if they are to legitimately contend for a third straight regular-season title. Ohio State, 2-4 away from home, plays at Penn State tonight and at Iowa on Saturday.

"This is a real big week for us," senior guard Jamar Butler said. "Going into another team's environment is tough, and in the Big Ten, it's really tough.

"We have to be ready to play these next two games and, hopefully, come out with two wins."

New edition: Young OSU starts strong in Big Ten

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - As the Ohio State moves beyond the midway point of the college basketball season, a long look in the mirror reveals a drastically different team than last year, but one that might be further along in its development than expected. Ohio State's "Extreme Makeover - Big Ten Edition" has produced a 14-6 record, wins in five of the first seven conference games, and an emerging identity. This is definitely not last year's Buckeyes, who won the Big Ten title, and went 35-4 on their way to the NCAA championship game. From that team, OSU lost three gifted underclassmen to the NBA, and two seniors who figured prominently in the
success. A lot of the void that major turnover in personnel created has been filled by freshmen who have had their introduction to this level on the fly. Jamar Butler, a senior in the current lineup that includes four freshman in its primary rotation, said the younger players are progressing.

College basketball
Ohio State out to reverse road course
Buckeyes, 1-2 in Big Ten away games, haven't traveled well

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
0129matta200.jpg

They were wide-eyed tourists when the season began. They craned their necks at the tall buildings in New York and, while distracted, had their blocks knocked off by Texas A&M.
They visited historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and, to their surprise, had their pockets picked by those nice-looking boys from Butler.
How much has a young Ohio State men's basketball team grown since those early weeks of the season? How much tougher and smarter and wiser to the ways of the college basketball world are the Buckeyes? Will they take care of business when they return to the road tonight at Penn State and Saturday at Iowa?
"I don't know if we're quite businessmen yet," coach Thad Matta said yesterday with a smile. "I think we're a young group of guys who have a little bit better understanding of the mind-set you have to have."
