Ohio State's Jon Diebler, left, puts up a layup against fellow freshman Kosta Koufos. Koufos had 15 points, Diebler 13.
The question after 30 minutes of scrimmaging against one another was whether the defense caused the Ohio State men's basketball team to shoot so poorly or the poor shooting made the defense look better than it was.
"You thought we played defense?" coach Thad Matta said. "I didn't think we played any.
"That's one of the big things, for our guys to understand the intensity. We didn't communicate. The only guys talking were the coaches. Great defensive teams are always communicating."

Memories of Greg Oden swatting shots, Mike Conley Jr. knifing through traffic and Ron Lewis draining backbreaking jumpers in the NCAA Tournament are now just that ? memories. Now, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta is going to have to develop a new core of players if he is to return the Buckeyes to the NCAA Tournament.
When the OCC ? freshmen Oden, Conley and Daequan Cook ? elected to join Lewis and Ivan Harris in departing, the roster from last season?s 35?4 squad that reached the NCAA final was seriously depleted, and the questions regarding the 2007-08 season doubled.
?It does (leave a hole) in some regards, but it?s part of the process of recruiting these days, and we?re still so young in what we?re building here that I think that it?s a situation where we?ve got to handle it and continue to build,? Matta says.

Ohio State will not quite be the same this year, but overreacting to the departure of Greg Oden is a popular pastime in Big Ten country. Sure this is an even younger team than last year and the incoming class cannot compare to last year (but when can it), but the Buckeyes will not fall off the face of the earth. Coach Thad Matta will have his troops ready to go and Ohio State will be near the top of the conference and back in the tournament. They just will not stick around as long as they did last year.

If you were hoping to score a single ticket to the Ohio State men's basketball game against North Carolina, you'll have to buy four. But only one of them will get you into Value City Arena to see the Tar Heels.
In a move to increase attendance at four of the less-attractive nonconference home games on this season's schedule, Ohio State is tying them into ticket packages with four of the most attractive games. The packages, which begin at $60 apiece, go on sale Monday.
