A loophole?
Former Alabama football players say the school's No. 1-ranked football program has tried to gain a competitive edge by encouraging some underperforming players to quit the team for medical reasons, even in cases where the players are still healthy enough to play.
At least 12 times since coach Nick Saban took over the program in 2007, Alabama has offered players a "medical" scholarship, according to public statements made by the team. These scholarships, which are allowed under NCAA rules, are intended to make sure scholarship athletes who are too injured to play don't lose their financial aid. A player who receives one of these scholarships is finished playing with that team.
Three Alabama players who've taken these exemptions say they believe the team uses the practice as a way to clear spots for better players by cutting players it no longer wants. These players said they believe Mr. Saban and his staff pressure some players to take these scholarships even though their injuries aren't serious enough to warrant keeping them off the field.

That article about Tress is just awesomeness. :) I don't know how anyone can be a fan of college football and not like the guy. He cares about kids...period.

Not really sure what the problem is here. If you're not good enough to make the grade and be a productive member of the team, Saban gives you two options: transfer, or accept a non-athletic scholarship that will allow you four years of free college anyhow. How is this unfair to the student-athlete?

They signed to play football.

Oversigning gives a clear numbers advantage by allowing coaches to 'sign' more athletes, then pare down the roster based on performance. The 'medical' exemption can be exploited as a loophole to keep some on scholly but effectively cut them from the team.

Sure, you could say, "well, you weren't good enough to play football for us, but hey, you're still getting a full ride." If you can't see that as exploitative and 'working' the system, then I don't know what to tell you.

Every coach "pares down the roster based on performance." So again, given that more young men get a full ride, IMO this isn't exploitative of the young men in the least.

Now, does it give Saban and other coaches in leagues that permit this practice an advantage over teams in leagues that prohibit it? Of course. If it's really a problem, it seems to me that the NCAA should step in. But I can't criticize Saban for what he's doing here.

It's immoral and a perversion of the rules to gain a competitive advantage. This is a problem in this country. Just because something is legal, it does not make it right for you to do it. In Ohio, the legal age of consent is 16. If a 40 year old was going around and having relations with 20 different 16 year olds, I would have a problem with that. But it is very legal.

Edit: I would have a problem with 1. But to do it continually, is disgusting.
