Gosh if Tajh were to choose OSU is this scenerio possible?

Medical-09
Redshirt-10
Start-11'

If i'm not mistaken he would be a FRESHMAN with no one really to compete with if Pryor were to leave his Junior year.

Hopefully though he has a speedy recovery. For not getting much pub in practice all week he sure played great in the AA game.
The system doesn't work that way. Medical redshirt can be taken only in the case that the regular redshirt has already been used up. If a player takes a redshirt 1st year at a college, regardless of whether they are injured or not, they use up their redshirt.

FWIW this is not quite accurate. A medical redshirt cannot be requested until it is needed (other eligibility has been used) but it essentially just adds another year to the clock. There is no reason it can't be triggered by a lost first season of eligibility.

That is correct. Once a student is enrolled into school they have 5 years to use their 4 years of eligibility (with a redshirt year possible). The only way to get a 6th year is to do a greyshirt year.

That is incorrect, a medical redshirt can be granted in some cases in addition to a traditional redshirt, giving a player 6 years on a college roster. But I imagine that would only apply to Tahj if he were to miss another season due to injury after he redshirts next year.

He doesn't have to redshirt his true freshman year in order to get a sixth year via medical redshirt...it doesn't matter which year out of the "five to play four" is used for the normal redshirt.

That would be up to the NCAA, but the assumption here is that Tajh will likely redshirt next year due to his surgery, and I would expect him to have to sustain further medical hardship in order to get that rare 6th year.

I agree. I may have misread your previous post as meaning a medical redshirt could only be granted if a player redshirted in his true freshman, and not any other, year.

Ok, I do agree with that. I was looking at it from the stance of going into school with the idea of staying 6 years. A second "redshirt" can be applied for and granted by the NCAA on a case by case basis, due to injuries.

Didn't realize that. I knew that, for example, even if a player played 3 games his true freshman year, got injured, he definitely could get a redshirt. I just thought that it counted to his regular redshirt.

Now, suppose the same player gets injured during off-season and he's out for the season, say his true junior year. Can he take his regular redshirt his true junior year? What if he gets injured after playing 3 games again his true junior year?

You can't take a regular redshirt during any year that you play. You can take a regular redshirt your junior season if you have not already used it up and you do not play at all that season.

You are eligible to apply for a medical redshirt when you miss 75% (IIRC) or more of the season, but you can be denied.
