Md. police officers ignore speed cameras

ROCKVILLE, Md. - No matter what the cameras say, some drivers are refusing to pay dozens of $40 speeding fines. Who? Police officers.

In the last eight months of 2007, Montgomery County's new speed cameras recorded 224 cases in which police vehicles were recorded traveling more than 10 mph over the speed limit, according to department records.

Contd...

Only in Maryland :roll2:

I've seen cops turn their lights on...go through an intersection in which the light was red, then proceed to turn the lights off and continue on. Seen it twice in the last 6 months. Then I've seen cops turn the lights on to get everyone out of their way on the highway, then flip them off when traffic is cleared for them.

oh well, what are ya gonna do?

Only in MD my ass. Cops abuse thier power everywhere. Especially like this. I couldn't count how many times I've seen a cruiser going sixty in a 35 with no lights on.

I meant only in MD would they get caught on speed cameras

Oh, ok. Gotcha.

Supervisors dismissed 76 of those citations after determining the officers were responding to calls or had valid reasons to break the speed limit.

Valid reasons?! Other than responding to a call, what the fuck is a valid reason?

The police union says officers shouldn't pay because the citations are issued to the owner of a vehicle, in this case the county, and not to the driver.

Wow. Fucking bullshit.

Not that this is always the reason, but sometimes the cops are actually doing it to help people. At my department, our policy says that to run lights and siren, the risk of the person getting away must be greater than the risk of running hot. Kind of a vague policy since officers aren't able to see into the future to see what the end result of running hot or not running hot will be. Either way, we don't run lights and sirens 99% of the time. We don't even run hot to robbery alarms since we don't know if it's for real or just an alarm and it can take an officer 20 minutes to get there during busy times of day.

Most of the cops I know hate this b/c you truly aren't going to get there in time to make a difference. Not too many cops are going to turn their lights on and blow an intersection to hurry to a call that they aren't really needed. We just aren't in that big of a hurry to do a report. We also don't get a blazing hard on to drive fast...most of us aren't 16 years old.

Some cops do dumb shit that give us all a bad name. However, most bust their asses and make sacrifices that most of the critics wouldn't even bother to consider. So if you want to rush to judgement on why that cops may be breaking the speed limit or breaking a traffic law...go ahead...you have that right.

But also consider this...if you or a dear member of your family needed help right now, do you want the cop coming to help you to drive 25 mph? Or, could you forgive him if he drove 35mph in a 25mph if it benefited your immediate family?

Walk a mile before you judge....

Since you're in the know of the situation, and I know pretty much your whereabouts..There were a lot of RUMORS in 06 with the fatal crash in gallipolis saying officers were speeding without sirens. No disrespect intended by any means, because I admittedly do not know the entire situaton. I am just questioning if speeding without sirens does occur more often then I would have thought...In any case I would like to know if a police officer needs me to pull over and get out of the way....I lived pretty close to your area and know of some policeman who are currently under some fire for "hazing" a newbie officer...

There are more idiots on that police force, then anywhere else I know...How would I know? I went to school with several of them and actually wrote down the wrong answers for a test intentionally because I seen him looking over at my paper, then watched him turn it in after I fixed mine...He couldn't pass basic english class....Now he's a policeman there..You can look at that entire department and see it's polluted with teacher's sons, and city council friends....I am glad to say that I know not everywhere is even close to that..but there is definitely some infestation of rats in certain areas..

My work is actually closer to Columbus, so I don't know about the Gallipolis situation. I also don't know about the guys at your school. I can tell you that where I work, officers earn their spot and nothing is handed out.
Police work is 75% common sense (you'd be surprised how hard that can be to find) and 25% book smarts.

Unbelievable... I can't just let these comments float out there uncontested. They are an absolute embarrassment.

My suggestion to you, since you're obviously living in a fascist police-state, is to pick up and move to "everywhere". It's only a matter of time before "the idiots on that police force" get you... :shake:

But that left 148 who didn't have that excuse, and about two-thirds of those citations haven't been paid, said police Lt. Paul Starks.

It is surprising that people associated with other civic-minded people would wind up in police service?

Nope.

Politically-connected people end up in civil service positions all the time. Qualified or not, if your brother-in-law needs a job and you're in position to give him one, you do it. After all, you're not paying for it. It's on the backs of the taxpayers.

Where I live, and work, that's business as usual. :roll2:
