Kiper owned that argument.

Is Detroit going to pass on a franchise QB to select a higher rated player on their board at a position they aren't critcically hurt at??

Can you imagine Cleveland selecting Matthew Stafford at #5 b/c he is available and is higher on their board than Everette Brown/Malcolm Jenkins/Rey Mauluaga??

It's just horrible logic. But to look at this from the ESPN business angle, they are hoping Todd McShay becomes the next Kirk Herbstreit. A hip guy with looks who can talk football and cross-over to the female audience. Unfortunately, those that actually know sports, realize the guy over-simplifies all of his analysis and does a poor job of assessing talent.

I'm still baffled neither Kiper or McShay has brought up the fact that this may be the slowest combine in the last 15 years. Why hasn't that been brought up???

Because neither of them wants to admit that any non-Buckeye ran a slow time. I still cannot believe how no one is mentioning that Moreno ran a horrible 4.6+ forty at the combine (slower than Beanie), and yet he's supposed to be the slasher, quicker type of RB out of the two.

It's amazing how some guys (e.g., D. Williams of PSU, Moreno) get a pass for running a slow forty, yet others (Jenkins, Laurinaitis) get hammered for it. I was listening to ESPN radio last night, and I actually heard Mel Kiper say (after blasting Jenkins for a slow forty time and saying he would slip in the draft because of it) that although D. Williams ran a slow forty and had trouble catching the ball, he (Mel) attributes it more to just a bad day. WTF?

Threads like these remind me that I made the right choice not to pay these idiots any attention at all....

The over coverage of the draft is ridiculous in terms of time... thus these morons have to make up stories. They're given a little information, 40 time apparently chief among them, and they go off on it like it's the holy fucking grail of player skill. If McFlay and Kupier were so good at spotting talent, they'd be NFL GMs. As it is, neither of them have NFL jobs.... and this is a league that employed Matt fucking Millan....

Fuck them. And fuck their opinions about who's the better player for whatever team they're talking about... or the league in general.

I saw Jenkins play in college.... I don't care how fast he runs.. I don't care how high he jumps... and I don't care how many reps he can do at 225 or what his shuttle time is.... I have seen that the man can play football. If McFlay and Kupier say something different, they're not doing their jobs.

Agree, it is almost as if the "recruiting" geniuses are telling the pros who to pick . No need for scouts. :wink2:

i think that if you asked actual NFL scouts which drill they took more stock in as it relates to cb's that you would find the short shuttle and cone drills would probably be ahead of the 40 9 times out of 10 at worst.

i think it's borderline comical that neither of these two doltbags will acknowledge the fact that jenkins turned in the best 3-cone of the combine and one of the fastest 3-cones in a decade.

but, the cracker-jack asswads that they are, if jenkins had popped off a 4.35 40, but was stiff as a board with no agility or ability to change direction whatsoever, they would be tossing off to him each night, then act stunned when he actually fell on draft day.

To me that argument is exactly what sets apart Kiper from McShay. McShay says things to get a rise. Kiper looks at things from a bunch of different angles and comes up with at least a half-way practical answer.

That's why you see my friend....McShay fits ESPiN well. They don't need a researched response. They need one that can get the most viewers.

I don't really care for either guys...but Kiper's stuff is backed by whatever research and experience he has.

I don't watch College Gameday or any shows like that on ESPN anymore. I only resort to it if there's a game on, or maybe sportscenter.
I feel like this site gives out plenty of knowledgeable info about things from high school athletics to spreads in vegas lol. Love this place.

You don't believe in the lone gunman theory do you?

Kiper has always been a supporter of tOSU.

Ha--good point. :wink2: No, I don't. And you're right about Kiper. I thought his comments last night, though, on the radio were pretty ridiculous. The question was which player hurt his draft stock most at the combine, and his immediate response was Malcolm Jenkins. Solely based on the 40 time. No mention of Malcolm blowing up the 20 yard cone drill.

How is the OT from Alabama not the obvious answer to that question? Or Derrick Williams, who Kiper bent over backwards to make excuses for. If you're a WR who at the combine showed yourself to be slow and unable to catch the ball, how can you be a contributor in the NFL?

Just thought Mel's comments last night were pretty bad, albeit out of character.

He says some stupid things sometimes, for sure.

Beanie and Malcolm are still #1 at their positions on his draft board if I'm not mistaken. Sometimes he can say some contradictory things. Much better than McShay though.
