uh, yeah, Limbaugh's comments weren't stupid or anything:
"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL,'' Limbaugh said. "The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well ... McNabb got a lot of the credit for the performance of the team that he really didn't deserve.''

Still not buying it. Nothing against you or your post, but I've got a real hard time feeling sorry for anyone making multi-millions to play a game, who feels like he should get paid more. They always bitch about getting respect or props, or whatever the hell it is that makes them feel bigger or more important than everyone else.
When a guy like Brady is offered a bigger salary and he says "no, I make enough, keep it to spend on improving the team", that's one thing (and it's commendable). But for this "journalist" to suggest that McNabb pony up out of the blue so crybaby TO can have more than $49 million, that's another thing. A stupid thing.
And by the way, Limbaugh may have been stupid in how he made his comments, but if you really think about it he's not so far off. The media, and all of the lemmings who listen to them, have been "desirous" that black coaches and QBs do well. That's been a concern for years.

Its one thing if TO was a free agent and they needed cap space to sign him... but TO was UNDER CONTRACT.

If I recall, it initially was more of an outcry to have have more minority coaches, period. Of course people, especially those of AA decent, want them to do well as this eliminates excuses for not having them. (see NCAA coaching composition. To be fair there have been two more AA head coaches hired to bring the number to 5 or 6 out of 118) It's also a tremendous source of pride to have first the attainment, then success in an arena not previously accessabile for AA. This goes back to the old original "Black QB" train of thought. It's why in light of this history, the comments made by the NAACP representative are so bizzare. It's quite the paradox when AA reach certain socio-economic and political status the expectations of other AA.

I certainly wasn't saying it to defend TO. In fact, I believe I said that. I'm using it to defend Bryan Westbrook, who contributions to the team were greater than TO's and nearly equal to McNabb's. Yet, he was incredibly underpaid compared to the two.
When they say there's some animosity right now in the Eagles lockerroom towards Donavon McNabb, that stems from his contract. McNabb has a ridiculous size contract and the players on that team are jealous - which we all know breeds division, and that exactly what happened.
On the tired subject of Limbaugh, his comment was entirely inaccurate in its context. The way he said it was to say that black coaches and/or quarterbacks get more credit than they deserve. That is flat wrong. If McNabb was at all overrated, it was because he was the QUARTERBACK on a successful team, and the QB gets all the credit or the blame, white or black. Tony Dungy hasn't gotten much credit at all from the media, not because he's black or white, but because he's just not all that charismatic. Marvin Lewis is getting a shitload of credit, because well, he f'n deserves it. I don't see anyone in the media talking up Dennis Green's job, or Anthony Wright at quarterback.

so who is at fault here? McNabb or the eagles organization? Somehow Peyton makes a ton of money and they still fork over the dollars to other athletes. Look at westbrook, they eventually took care of him, but it took a long time.
I think Limbaugh was partially correct in his argument, but delivered it in a reckless fashion and earned what he got.

Stupid or not, they were just his opinion. Just the other day I saw the ESPiN guys practically accusing the Texans of losing on purpose because they want Reggie Bush. Where's the outrage over that? People in sports commentary jobs go all over the place saying this and that and it's mostly ignored because everyone knows that they're paid to do that just to get ratings and shake things up. But McNabb not only took offense to the comments, but he actually accused Limbaugh of racism. That's over the line, in my opinion. What Limbaugh said about writers wanting to see a "black QB succeed" is undeniably true. They've been saying it for 20+ years. I've seen it. I disagreed with Limbaugh when he said that McNabb was getting too much credit, but that was just his opinion. The same things have been said of many players for many years with no controversy.
The only reason there was controversy on that one occasion is because McNabb accused Limbaugh of racism. Unfortunately, there's no defense against that charge. But it's a serious charge and that's why it shouldn't be thrown around anytime someone gets their feathers ruffled (no pun intended). It should be reserved for clear cases like the "breeding" comments of Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder. Limbaugh's comments, while they were designed to get people talking and arguing, were not "hostile or abusive" (to coin the NCAA's phrase regarding mascots) and should have been chalked up as normal talking-head banter. There is no comparison between that and the recent remarks of the NAACP guy, except that McNabb's feathers are ruffled once again.

I would not criticize Limbaugh's comments as racist, but I could certainly see how someone could take it that way. McNabb is going to take more offense to the comment because it was directed at him. I'm sure he's heard a thousand times that he won't succeed at quarterback, and I'm sure many of those times, it was directed at his race. So, when someone criticizes him as a QB, and race is brought up, he's going to assume that the comment was directed at his race.
Limbaugh's comment was his way of getting another jab at the media. He has this crusade he's on against the so-called "liberal" media, and he let his opinion on an NFL show be clouded by that crusade. Apparently, he viewed praise for McNabb as some sort of athletic affirmitive action - when in reality, sports are the greatest form of meritocracy. McNabb's performance on the field as the leader of a team with a great defense is no different from Tom Brady's leadership, except Brady gets a lot more credit because he's white, err... because he's won 3 Super Bowls. ESPN should have seen that coming when they hired Rush - they got what they wanted - they got what I expected - and they watered down their already watered-down product because of it.
You're right. It wasn't racism. But it sure was stupid.

No excuse. I was beat up by a bunch of black kids when I was 12. Should I now assume that every time someone of a darker skin raises their hand near me that they are going to hit me? Of course not. McNabb is a big boy now and he needs to grow up. He's the QB of an NFL team in a town where the fans are fair-weather fans at best. He's going to be criticized. Deal with it like an adult or else you don't deserve to collect that massive salary.
That's your opinion. And saying what he said was his opinion. So you're saying because you disagree with him that it's OK for him to be accused of racism? Racism is a very serious charge and I don't think it should be thrown around irresponsibly. All QB's in the NFL, no matter what their skin color is, get criticized for one thing or another. The fact that he was white didn't do Tim Couch much good in Cleveland. He was still criticized.
The guy from the NAACP is a nut job, and he should be ignored. The fact that McNabb chose to respond to him shows that he is just as thin-skinned now as he was 2 years ago.
By the way, I appreciate the comments about Marvin Lewis in your previous post. You know, there's still room on the Bengals bandwagon if you want to jump on. But I must say your guys played with a lot of heart on Sunday. I'm sure they will improve a lot next year.
One other thing: I've been talking up Anthony Wright for 3 years. But I'm not saying it loud enough for Brian Billick to hear. After all, it's in my best interest as a Bengals fan that he keep playing that stiff Boller while the more talented Wright sits on the bench. The Ravens are pure evil, and I want them to keep losing.

I agree that McNabb should have ignored this completely. And some of you are forgettting that Narc Limbaugh has a track record on his show of saying racist things. Who can forget that he would play the Jefferson theme song when discussing Carolyn Mosley Braun? When discussing black leaders, he says ak instead of ask.
Maybe he isnt truly racist and all of these were musings of a drug abuser.

With the Limbaugh thing, I could kind of tell what he was trying to say, he just came out about it wrong, and should have been smarter than to not say it on television, where he knew it would be blown up.
His point about "the media and fans wanting a black quarterback to do well" can have something of a point to it, but you have to be careful with those racial comments nowadays. If you're not careful, people will make you out to look like a racist, if you are white and say it.
