Maurice and the Combine (MERGED)

When Clarrett was a senior at Warren Harding I was one of about 26,000 people to watch him put up 401 yards rushing and 115 yards receiving against #4 in the state, Lakewood Saint Edward in a play off game. Saint Edward has an enrollment of about 1500 male students. In the first half Clarrett carried the ball 13 times for 312 yards and 5 TDs against a team with at least a future Division 3 player at every position.

Never in a million years did I think life would turn out this way for this kid. Talk about flushing a life filled with blessings down the toilet. Indeed, a shame.

Not sure if I posted this on this board or elsewhere, so I'm gonna risk repeating myself:

Never before have I seen someone waste so much talent with so many wrong choices that were totally separate and that were entirely his fault. He was a guaranteed top-10 pick (most screwups are possible future pros, most aren't as guaranteed of the future as he was) with $10 Million as a signing bonus, and now he'll make chump change and probably be in debt for the rest of his life (since we all know how good he is at paying things off).

What a waste. Suck it Clarett.

But he showed up Thursday with a very buff 234 pounds layered on his frame, and even more important, a willingness to display it. As opposed to last year, Clarett will run, jump, lift and take part in every drill offered. He promised potential employers he was ready to do things on their terms, even if it meant getting chewed up as a spare part on special teams.

and if he would have went to tOSU with that attitude he would be dusting his 2 heisman's off with his feet up wondering how many 10's of millions his signing bonus would be.

you almost have to feel sorry for the guy. its like a cosmic joke really. for that kind of athletic talent to be with coupled with such nonexistant brain power. as much as i hated him for the things he did, i can't help but feel pity for him. he's not a threat, he's no danger. hell, he isn't even a hasbeen. he is a never was. which after seeing his potential really makes me feel bad. i just can't help but think where i could have made it if i had a fraction of his ability.

but on a much more positive note. could nuge be a better person? im going to have to name my first born mike now... god i hope it isn't a girl.. the shrink bills will really suck :(.

No, he could not. And keep in mind Michaela (Dr. Quinn, "medicine woman" such a clever titlet) is always an option.

MoC brought all of this upon himself. He may blame others, but when it all comes down to it, it's all his own doing. I hope he teaches future Buckeyes a lesson about life and how to approach playing football at Ohio State.

Michelle is the feminine form of Michael, so you're set. Then again, I've never heard of the middle name "Nugentina".

It is hard to think of anyone who has blown so much potential in such a short time. He should not be allowed to do anything at Ohio State, period.
He who shall not be named had 11.4% body fat this time on 234 lb.

Guess he still needs to shed a few.

these NFL GMs did not get to where they are because they're stupid...
You obviously have not spent 15 years in the same town as Mike Brown. The man brings new meanings to the words stupid and arrogant, and like many others in the higher offices of the NFL, he got there through nepotism.

The thing that shocked me the most about a lot of the RB's that I saw run the 40 is that they are using bad starting technique. Especially Dudly (I think that's who it was) from SCum. A good start would take at least .1 off the time.

Back to MoC. After thinking about it he will get drafted somewhere. He has too much potential for a team not to take a shot on him in the 6th or 7th. Hell the Brown's drafted a long snapper in the 5th 2 years ago. Even though MoC is a giant headcase he was a great RB for a year. If you draft him late and he busts what did you really lose? If he gets his head on straight he could still be a good NFL RB. We never knew what his 40 time was, but he never seemed to get run down from behind.

yes, 40 times are definitely over-rated, and can be compensated for by vision and tackle breaking ability, but those 4.8 numbers for a RB are DREADFULLY slow

TO REALLY PUT HIS 40 TIME INTO PERSPECTIVE:

Literally half, 11 of the 22 QB's ran faster or virtually equivalent times at the combine than Maurice Clarett, including:

Chris Rix - 4.70
Aaron Rogers - 4.73
Alex Smith - 4.75
Bryan Randall - 4.72

Folks, David Greene and Charlie Frye ran 4.81 forties, and Jason White, yes 2 knee surgery Jason White, ran a 4.89.

Although he is probably going to be a WR in the NFL, Arkansas QB Matt Jones' worst 40 time was 4.50 with a best of 4.41...and he is 6'6 240ish

I personally think the combine has allowed numerous average players to get drafted in the first round solely based on the numbers they put up in the combine, not the production on the field, but the reality is that these owners and scouts believe in this system and the bottom line is that if a kid puts together a good 40 time with a strong performance that is the key to getting drafted, not what the kid did in 3-4 years in college. I think its completely insane to put so much importance on a 40 time.

Now in MOCs case, at his position, his need for speed is vital and obviously, running a 4.7-4.8 is not going to get it done at the NFL level. At the college level his power and strength allowed him to excell in the 7 games he played but at the next level everyone is big and powerful. Speed is the name of the game in the NFL and it looks like he has lost some of his speed for whatever reason.

The fact he quit after running the 40 time is very telling. He has not changed since his last days as a Buckeye and I think its in his nature to blame others for his failures. I somewhat feel sorry for him, what a waste of his opportunities he has had so far in his life. I do not wish him failure, but I hope he earns whatever success he achieves in life from this point on. If he makes it in the NFL, he will have to earn it.
