We'll be going at the end of September/early October and will be there for 10 days. We want to drive the Hana Hwy, take a zipline, play a round or two of golf and spend plenty of time on the beach. And then of course, there's the matter of finding a way to watch the OSU game that will take place during that time. Does anybody have any recommendations for places to go, places to eat at or things to do?

Other than beach and ocean activities, Haleakala and the Road to Hana were the first two things I thought of. The Io needle is also worth seeing, and it only takes an hour or two.

There's a decent small whaling museum in Lahaina, and the banyan tree there is also interesting.

When I was there I took a helicopter ride instead of making that long drive to Hana. I hear that drive is beautiful, but very long. The helicopter ride was sweet.

You can rent ATV's, go snorkeling, deep sea fishing, there's an aquarium by LaHaina that was pretty cool, but don't eat at the restaurant there because it sucked.

Go to a good Luau and get hammered.

You will wake up at like 4 or 5am every morning because your time will be so far off and probably be in bed by 9pm. Cool to watch the sunrise though.

Check out Mt. Haleakala. When you're up there in the clouds, you can see the peaks of the other volcanoes in the distance. It is very cool.

I had been wondering about Halekala. I had heard good things about it, but wanted to make sure it was worthwhile before getting up in the middle of the night to get out there.

Probably won't do the helicopter ride though - I get motion sickness pretty easily, and the plane rides to and from are going to kick my ass as it is.

Don't know if you plan on island jumping any, but if so, Kauai is beautiful. Take one of the catamaran tours of tha Napali coast...it's breathtaking.

We're not planning on island jumping per se - We're gonna make a stop on Oahu on the way back so we can spend a day visiting the USS Arizona Memorial and Punchbowl.

It was my first helicopter ride and it just felt like you were floating. I don't have motion sickness, but I do get seasick and I was OK. There's always motion sickness medicine you can take if you decide you want to do it. The doors of the helicopter were open and you can just puke out the door if you get sick! :sick1:

I've never rode in a helicopter before, but that floating feeling is exactly what does me in. I've gotten sick on a cruise ship, on planes, reading in the car or even just riding in the backseat without a constant clear view of the road ahead. The motion sickness meds don't really help me. I need to be asleep.

That sucks because it was really cool. That drive to Hana is curvy as hell, so hopefully that won't make you sick.

concur with Hana Highway. That was the highlight of our trip. Also find a sunset dinner cruise. We really enjoyed that. Lobster tail and steak on a boat in the ocean as the sun set. It was beautiful.

beware the time share people. we were naive and thought saving 20% on a snorkel tour was worth a "1 hour presentation." We were held hostage for almost two hours before finally getting our discount coupon. Darn near ruined the trip for us.

I did the following a few years ago (listed in order of enjoyment):

1. Molikai Mule Ride..part of the tour is a short flight to Molikai..it was expensive but a great tour... Tour: The Kalaupapa National Historical Park and Guided Mule Tour

2. Sunrise bike ride down Haleakala volcano... you got to get there before dawn and it is actually cold up there then. The bike ride was over 30 miles and all downhill.

3. Scuba at Molokini Crater and "turtle town".

4. Day catamaran sail to Lanai...saw dozens and dozens of spinner dolphins

5. Road to Hana...bought a tape at a gas station close to the start that had a narration of the entire trip. (i.e it tells where to stop and what to look at, etc. as you drive along

6. Did a luau in the Lahaina area....In my opinion they are kind of a tourist rip off.

I bought the tours through a "time share" company to get a very good discount. I did save about $200. The bad news was that I had to sit through a time share presentation (about 2 hours). :(

You should wait and go after football season to see the whales: Hawaii?s whale watching season takes place from late November to mid-April.

Hike up to the Seven Sacred Pools. (take a lot of mosquito repellent)
The bike ride down Haleakala is dangerous and too fast for many but experienced riders to handle. It has a bad reputation for accidents.
Scuba/snorkeling is great!
Have some amazing sushi!(Village At Kapalua Resort The: Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar)And play golf.
And amazing local fish. http://kiheicaffe.com/

I'm always fine if I'm driving, so no worries there.

No way I'm sitting through a time-share" presentation. I've seen that episode of South Park. :tongue2:

The bike ride down the crater sounds good. I think I'd be fine, but my fiancee is not much of a bike rider so it's probably not a good idea for her.

The mule ride sounds cool... their website shows that a bridge is out and tours are suspended. Bummer.

Have a lovely Hawaiian beach girl slather sun tan lotion on your back and then get you an icy drink (of your choice) with an umbrella. At the beach of course.

It's my honeymoon, so I think that one's a no-go. :tongue2:
