Maryland at tOSU, Sat. 10/7, 12pm ET, FOX

I’ve never met one in real life, but I’ve heard from people who have that Maryland fans are a top 5 obnoxious/worst fanbase.

Can anyone confirm or rebut that claim?
I've met 2 Maryland fans in my life.

The first is a guy from college who grew up in Maryland, and wasn't much of a college football fan until he moved to Ohio. He has more-or-less adopted Ohio State as "his" team, but he isn't too invested emotionally in college football. He's more of an NFL and MLB guy. (Cleveland in both... sorry, Man...) But he said he roots for Maryland to do well. He doesn't want Maryland to spoil Ohio State's perfect season, ever, but he roots for them. Good guy - I like him.

The second was some random guy at the game a few years ago. Remember when Gus Johnson did the "Hurt - My - Feelings!" call for Denzel Ward? That was the game I was at with my son. I'll see if I can find a replay of that. Classic. Anyway, halftime, son needs to go to the bathroom. He was probably 10 at the time. So we're down standing in line for the bathroom, and a Maryland fan is in front of us. I'd guess he's 20-ish... 25 maybe. He said something like, "Yeah, I didn't expect to be able to win this game, but it's a lot of fun being here." He was respectful and pretty cool. No complaints.

Off-topic, here's the "Hurt - My - Feelings" call:

Worth the watch if you don't know about it, and worth it even if you watch it every day.
They decided it was an incomplete pass, and Ward was ejected from the game for "targeting". Watching it live from our seats at the game, I agreed that it should have been targeting. But when I watch the replay, I realize it was a "Time to penalize Ohio State" call.

Many people don't know about this one. A few games later, Ohio State was playing against Wisconsin in the championship game. Again, Gus Johnson with the play-by-play. Ward intercepted a pass. "Hurt - My - Feelings" 2.0:

They mostly are grumpy because they thought they bought tickets to a basketball game not knowing they have a football team. I can forgive them for that, most of our basketball fans make the same mistake, so it is a converse of sorts.

In all seriousness, I have a few friends that are UMD football fans and I have been to games in the Shoe against them to witness the 12 guys that show up for it. My experience is that they keep to themselves mostly, they know they are not a college football juggernaut and act accordingly. They were added to our conference for the media market and they know it (also see Rutgers). This year is different because they do have a legitimately good team, but to date they are a lost thought in B1G football play...they need a signature win, I just hope it isn't us tomorrow.

I feel like we sleep walked through the Maryland game last year, on the road the week before the Michigan game. That "trap" factor is not there this year. The BYE after ND was nice, I think this team really starts to hit it's stride in this one.

I agree with you in the sense that the "trap" factor is not as prevalent after a bye and having Purdue (rather than ttun) to follow up. If I am Maryland, I would hate both of those things.

But...Maryland just has a quality team and presents a threat regardless of that imo. We are perfectly capable of beating them by 20-30 points, but that would take a great degree of execution. I would take the under on this one if I still wagered on CFB games.

I think Maryland is at least decent but it's hard to tell how good they actually are. Considering Indiana is probably the best team they've played.

Fair enough, but they did beat IU more soundly than we did. But that's never really a great metric to go by in comparing scores, especially when we were on the road Week 1.

So if we do happen to blow the roof off, I wouldn't be shocked. I just think some fans are being a tad too dismissive of Maryland based on past years. They're much better than year's past imo.
