MIKE LOCKSLEY, HEAD COACH

Opening statement:
“... they did a really good job of limiting explosive plays and creating turnovers which, as we talked about with our squad, our winning formula is being able to generate explosives, take care of the football, and defense, limit the explosives and get turnovers and we didn't do either very well today. I liked the way we started fast. Had an opportunity there in the first half. As I told our team just now, you know, for us to take that next step, we've got to be able to make the plays that are there to be made. We had a couple of situations in the first half, we didn't come away with a touchdown down inside the five. We didn't get a fourth-and-1, and those are the types of plays where our best players got to show up and make plays and we've got to do a better job as a coaching staff of putting him in those positions to make plays.

“We talked all week about getting the game into the fourth quarter and then seeing where we fit. We were able to do that and I just didn't like the way we finished, which again, we can get those things corrected. When you go back and look at it, I'm sure we'll see that there was some opportunities that maybe affected us affecting us more than it was Ohio State. And it's my job to make sure we get those things corrected.”

On QB Taulia Tagovailoa:
“Obviously when you turn it over, not good. You give up a pick-6 there. You watch the tape, the receiver is supposed to turn inside, he turns outside. That’s a communication issue. The ball should have been thrown inside, we should have had a receiver inside. [Tagovailoa] is a veteran player that’s played a lot of football for us. We’ll win and lose with him, and I'll take my chances because he's a competitor. I’d like to see him play a little better today. We’ll look at the tape, get him corrected and get back home to the shell and got Illinois for Homecoming.”

On the protection and lack of run game:
“Their front seven is the strength of their defense. They play heavy-handed, especially in the interior parts of their defensive structure. But as I said, and even I'll continue to say it, it’s more about what we do a lot than what they do. There wasn't a scheme issue. Our inability to run the ball wasn't numerical because of the numbers they have or they schemed us, it was a matter of our players making plays up front. We were able to generate a couple of explosives, but not enough today.”

On the growth of QB Taulia Tagovailoa:
“As I said, his growth is beyond just one game. We’re not gonna let one game define kind of how he's grown up with us. I think the best part about him is the self-correction. He threw the pick-6 and as soon as he came off he said, ‘I thought [Tyrese Chambers] was turning inside.’ Those are the things where I see the growth, because he can self-correct. They did some really good things in terms of dropping eight to where we gotta find the open guy and check things down. But we'll win and lose with Taulia Tagovailoa. I’ll tell you he’s a competitor. I know he's not happy in the locker room with the way he played the day. None of us are and it's not one guy, it's all of us, including me. So we'll definitely take this opportunity, our first loss of the year, there is a lot of football left to be played. But our team understands how to prepare for games like this and now we just got to go find a way to win them.”

I didn't like much of anything I saw from the offense outside of the big plays. I realize that statement is a little at odds with itself. It was all or nothing today though. Luckily we have MHJ and the boys did hit a bunch of big plays.

Our OL is so bad at run blocking, it's unreal. This team should be able to run all over the Maryland defense. Take away Mccord's sacks and our RBs had 28 carries for ~81 yards. It was absolutely destroying destroying offense in the first half. McCord eventually got things rolling, but that was a rough first half for him and the offense. But it's hard to expect the QB to do anything when the opponent can run 3-3-5 and only give up 1.9 yards per carry.

Glad they got the win, glad they seemed to figure things out, defense turned it on and did its thing. We did see some pressure from the DL towards the end of the game. Saw some nice reads by the D for a couple INTs. Not all bad, not trying to be negative. Just think the OL is going to be a problem against a couple particular opponents.

Wasn't able to watch, how outraged should I be this week?

The first half and the early portion of the third quarter were exceptionally unpleasant since we only mustered up like 40 fucking yards.

The offensive line continues to not impose. The defensive line specifically on the outside continues to offer no semblance of a pass rush and provided the quarterback with what seems to be 5.5 seconds on average to throw.

Not exactly a good recipe for later in the season or even PSU but 5-0 and maybe they can continue to work on it and formulate a respectable approach to both.

Knowles blitzed more last season. That got sacks and burned at times. The burns have disappeared but without blitzing the pass rush has suffered because the line doesn't win often. Hopefully the line will improve the pass rush, but through five games the most points allowed was today - 17. I'll take fewer sacks if it means fewer points allowed.

Don't get me started on the run blocking...
Yeah last year Maryland/PSU the cracks started to show on D. They were much better this year

I'll say Knowles' defense was only partly responsible for allowing the 1st Maryland TD. Special team's failure of that fake punt play on 4th and 2 from the Ohio State 33 is should take some the the blame:

4th & 2 at OSU 33

(14:09 - 1st) Cody Simon run for loss of 3 yds to the OSU 30

I would like to hear from them on that play. I don't think it was a fake it looked like a shit snap. They didn't start the motion like you usually would on a fake until everyone went oh shit

Edit: yep bad snap

Day when asked about quarterback Kyle McCord and settling in over time, he said he couldn’t quite understand what was going in on the first couple of drives. The Buckeyes were out of sync, Day said. As for that first drive ending in a turnover on downs, Day said it wasn’t called a fake punt, it was just a botched snap
