Maryland 2021
I'm not going to write a full review of this game, because how much can you really say about a 66-17 blowout?
1. I do want to mention a few words about C.J. Stroud, because he will be the key to the Buckeye's success this season. While Stroud's numbers versus Maryland (24/33, 466 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT) were arguably better than his numbers versus Rutgers (17/23, 330 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT), the Buckeye quarterback was just a little bit off with some of his throws yesterday - he was often late (behind his receiver) on throws over the middle, and he missed a wide open Chris Olave on what would have been a 46-yard touchdown. Overall, I'd say that Stroud took maybe a quarter-step back from his nearly flawless performance against Rutgers. Stroud now gets a week off to rest and rehab his shoulder, then a final tune-up with Indiana on October 23rd, before facing his next real test against Penn State on October 30th.
2. Some blue check moron on Twitter - I won't mention his name because (1) I've never heard of him before, and (2) I don't want to give him any publicity - said before yesterday's games that the only legit Heisman candidates were Alabama QB Bryce Young and Texas RB Bijan Robinson. Of course, I understand that the whole purpose of Twitter is to strut your snarkiness ("Young and Robinson - that's the list.") while at the same time baiting (for example) Ohio State fans into responding (for example) "WHAT ABOUT CJ STROUD??????" With that being said, there's no way that Stroud is out of contention at this point, especially after completing 41/56 passes (.732) for 736 yards, 10 TD, and 0 INT over his last two games leading the top offense in all of FBS. And to add a further dose of stupidity to the situation, Young had a "meh" performance (28/48, 369 yards, 3 TD, INT) in a loss to an unranked team, while Robinson wasn't exactly Heisman-esque (20 rushes, 139 yards, TD) against a porous Oklahoma defense, and was clearly outshined by true freshman teammate Xavier Worthy (9 receptions, 261 yards, 2 TD) and opposing running back Kennedy Brooks (25 carries, 217 yards, 2 TD).
3. TreVeyon Henderson did crack the super-important 100-yard mark yesterday, but he looked rather pedestrian in so doing (16 carries, 102 yards, long of 17 yards, 2 TD); Tre also added 4 receptions for 67 yards and another touchdown. Chris Olave (7 receptions, 120 yards, 2 TDs) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (5 receptions, 103 yards) also eclipsed the 100-yard mark, while Garrett Wilson (5 receptions, 84 yards, 2 TDs) fell a few yards short. Emeka Egbuka had 3 receptions for 31 yards, and 4 kick returns for 166 yards, for a total of 197 all-purpose yards.
4. When Iowa beat Maryland 51-14, the narrative was "ZOMG!!!! Top-10 Defense!!!" Now that Ohio State has beaten Maryland 66-17, the narrative will be "It's Maryland, moron." Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa did complete 28 of 39 passes (71.8%), but most of those were a variety of screen or swing passes; when Tagovailoa did try to throw down field, he was picked twice by the Buckeye defense (Ryan Watts; Craig Young). Ohio State also recorded 5 sacks; held Maryland to 335 total yards (4.47 per play); and surrendered only two long gains (30-yard run, 43-yard pass), one of which came in garbage time. The defensive line was disrupting plays, the linebackers in general looked good, and the defensive backs weren't really tested by Maryland's dink and dunk passing attack; most importantly, the youngsters continued to shine. Is Maryland a crap team? Yes. Is the Ohio State defense getting better? Yes.
5. Is Ohio State the best team in the Big Ten? Clearly yes. Is Ohio State one of the top four teams in the country? Probably yes. If Stroud continues to play at a high level and the defense plays at least solid and forces turnovers, then the Buckeyes will once again be in the playoffs.
