Even if that phone is on another network or switch? I mean I won't argue because it isn't my area of expertise or what I'm particularly adept at. I just can't fathom some type of ring not happening even if the phone is out of any/all network range.
I'm pretty sure... I double checked... pretty sure if its off the network you go straight to voicemail

edit: if the phones weren't powered off it would ring until its last "location update" timed out... which is usually set at 1 hour.

I consulted someone with expertise in this industry. Some GSM networks produce a ring tone on a caller's phone when the call is processed at the switch in a foreign country, which cuts off to voice mail or disconnects when the phone cannot actually receive the signal. So, you can ring someone in Germany or India and their phone will appear to ring, even when it is not on the system. This is due, at least in part, to the fact that network operators charge you for the time of your call from the time your call is handled by the network, not when it is answered. The South African Alcatel and Siemens networks both do this and I have had it happen calling Shanghai. I've never called Vietnam and would like to place on record that I have never sourced Asian women for Mili either :)

So, the airline reports appear to be correct.

One thing I keep thinking about, wouldn't it be more productive if all parties stopped wasting fuel by flying around, searching the ocean and all got together for a unified search?

Rather than seven independent searches, one-unified search. But I understand this probably isn't possible for many reasons.

I admittedly know little or nothing about Malaysia, Malaysians, or... um... anything else that may be relevant. But which is more embarassing to the Malaysians: losing a plane ("losing", as in - they don't know where it is), or losing a plane ("losing", as in - someone took it from them)? If it's the latter, maybe it was hijacked and they know where it is, but they're too embarassed to let the public know.

The secret Nazis on the moon have returned to the earth and stolen a plane from the Malaysians and are planning to perform some evil experiments on the hostages. I'm pretty sure Saint JoePa is linked here, too.
