Maisel gives LSU credit

LSU needed the kind of comeback that only champions know how to make to overtake Oregon State, 22-21, in overtime in the muck and bog of Tiger Stadium.
How much crap did tOSU get over the 2 year period where they lost only 2 games, and won countless by less then 7 points. OSU was sad to be lucky to win close games yet LSU is considered to be a "champion" by winning a game in OT by 1 point when the opposing kicker missed 3 extra points.

I did not watch the game, so i'd like to hear others comments.

The difference is that LSU has that fancy offense and a history of blowing out cupcakes. They have no freshman headcases trying to leave for the pros and no lawsuits between offensive linemen. Their only loss was to another media darling, Florida. They beat the previously "unbeatable" Oklahoma who had just been beat in their CCG. Terry Porter didn't work the game. LSU is in the heralded SEC with power houses like Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Arkansas, while tOSU is the downtrodden Big Ten with scUM, Minnesota, Purdue and Wiscy.

That's why when LSU is lucky as hell to pull out a victory against a mid-tier Pac 10 team, they play like champs and we are just lucky SOB's who really didn't belong on the field with our opponents.

LSU won a game they should've lost to an unranked team that everyone thought LSU would blow out. They did not "play like champions"...they looked beat both physically and mentally until their last drive.

Funny how things change depending on which school is being written about. As was pointed out above, during the Buckeyes championship season, all we heard was how "lucky" they were to have won so many close games, that we should have lost but a school such as LSU makes a comeback that only champions can make.

Give me a frikkin' break Ivan!!! You're a genuine no nothing ignorant putz. I watched quite a bit of the OSU-LSU game and LSU was simply outplayed. If anybody was "lucky" it was LSU.

comments like this make you wonder if the media poll will keep LSU at #3. You have to think that they will drop after that unbelievably lucky win but I just don't know anymore. I mean, if OSU can drop like they did last year, then why can't LSU?

I watched the game and OSU, my undergrad school, simply ran out of gas. Their defense played really well until the end. I'm not even sure that lucky adequately describes it for LSU. The Tigers were outplayed at home at night, where LSU is supposed to be dominant, but OSU let it slip away. I give the Beavers all the credit in the world for playing better than anyone would've thought.

I agree with Maisel, unlike apparently everyone else.

This is their one game probably, (almost all undefeated teams have one game that they could've/should've lost but some how win). Ours was UC. To have these games happen early in the season makes it easier for teams to refocus, and stop taking game lightly. This will be a dangerous team the rest of the season.

In a surprise, Dennis Dodd called LSU lucky on CBSSportsline.com yesterday.

Since Dodd is a shill for the SEC (CBS shows their games), the words luck or lucky are nowhere to be found on that website's discussion of LSU today.

the media kept talking about how great the backup qb was, but he was just as terrible as the starter IMO
Russell "made" two plays at the end of the game (the consecutive passes to Bowe, first for 22 yards, then for 38 and the TD) that were entirely the result of Oregon State's complete defensive collapse (think Flutie to Phelan in the 1984 Miami game - where's the deep coverage?). Then he did a nice job on the two-point conversion, running the same play that he muffed badly on the earlier 4th and goal incompletion to Skyler Green, which was simply a terrible shot-put-like "pass" to a wide open receiver. In general, Russell's throws were errant and made with a distinct lack of confidence. It would a tremendous overstatement to say that Russell did even an adequate job in that game. Both Zwick and Smith performed better in their first significant action against Cincy.

In sum, LSU was lucky, period, as Oregon State did everything they could to throw that game away. In contrast, the 2002 Buckeyes generally made plays to win games, and did not rely on their opponents to make stupid mistakes to lose games.
