Source: Mack Brown forced out as Texas coach after president withdrew support
As of Saturday morning, Dec. 14, Mack Brown was going to be the Texas football coach in 2014. It had not been announced, but the decision had been made. Brown held a breakfast for recruits who were in town on official visits, and new athletic director Steve Patterson dropped by the breakfast to visit with the prospects.
Afterward, Brown and Patterson spent hours discussing the future of the program, potential improvements in the athletic department and other aspects of their working relationship going forward.
About an hour after that meeting ended, Brown got a call from Patterson, according to a source with intimate knowledge of the situation. The tone was completely different from the upbeat meeting that had just occurred.
"I've got to come over [to the football offices]," Patterson said.

He's reportedly stayed on the university payroll as a special advisor to president Bill Powers. Last week the city of Austin declared January 30 "Mack and Sally Brown Day," an event covered by Texas's own official football site.
Those facts make the conversation between four-star safety recruit John Bonney -- a long-time Texas commitment -- and Houston ABC station KTRK all the more potentially awkward. In this video, Bonney says that Brown told recruits visiting during the same weekend Brown resigned they should "look around" before signing with the Longhorns:
Excellent idea by Mack Brown. It is always good to tell recruits to look around.

Well done, Mack!

NFL teams ignore Longhorns
The Texas Longhorns made NFL draft history this week.
And not in a good way.
For the first time since 1937, the Longhorns failed to have a player selected in the NFL draft. Texas was one of just five schools from college football's five power conferences (Big 12, SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12) to suffer the ignominious feat. Illinois, Northwestern, Rutgers and fellow Big 12 member Kansas were the others.
The Texas shutout, however, was one of the big surprises of the draft.

Report: Former Texas coach Mack Brown's house destroyed by fire
FOX Sports
SEP 02, 2014 11:15a ET
A fire burned down the North Carolina home of former Texas coach Mack Brown last weekend, according to a report.
Brown reportedly had just moved much of his Longhorns memorabilia to that home from his Austin, Texas, residence and told an Austin newspaper all that's left are the chimneys.
The Linville, N.C., residence was a vacation home for Brown while he was coaching, and since retiring he had spent much of his time in the mountain home.
Brown posted this on Twitter on Tuesday morning:
Thx for your thoughts and prayers about the loss of our house. Tough deal, but thanks. Blessed everyone is fine and we are moving forward.
