If your friend left a good job to come to work at your company less than a year ago and then the company decided to focus on other sectors and thereby made a decision that interfered with his ability to carry out the job for which he was hired, then your friend should call an attorney.

Presumably the situation that underlies this should have been obvious to your firm when they employed your friend. In hiring him, they may have acted in bad faith. In any case, I can't believe that he will be unable to get a very good severance package.

If he was there for a week, yes. A year? No (assuming it was an at-will employment).

He should be able to continue his insurance although he will have to pay the entire premium which is expensive especially without a job.

There seems to be a good job market for the retail sector so perhaps he will land on his feet quckily.

I wish him well.
