Usually Friday is a good day ( last day of the work week, getting ready for the weekend) but today was a real downer. I had some issues today that affected me personally but nothing that nothing that most people experience on a day to day, week to week basis. I really started to feel a little sorry for myself until I received a call this afternoon.
One of my co-workers who lives in the Tampa Area was let go by our firm. He did nothing wrong he was just told his services were no longer needed. Sadly, this was all done over the phone. He has been with our firm (retail consulting) for less than a year and he left a good job to work for us. He now has a wife and kids to support and no job. His benefits run out (medical & dental insurance, etc.) at the end of this month. This is all because a decision on our firm's structure was made that effected the retail component of our business. Based on this decision our retail consulting pipeline has narrowed and slowed to a trickle. It has sacrificed a healthy division (a star in the firm) and has greatly affected our ability to sell work. The jury is still out on the rest of the other industries in which we consult, however it is a shame that this decision brought the demise of my collegue's jposition. I know this happens every week in America but it really hits home when it effects someone you know.
This brings my little problems of the day into perspective. This guy although has savings must find a job in order to support his family. I wish I had some contacts in the Tampa area to help him or at least give him some leads. It could have been me instead of him looking for a job. But there for the grace of God go I....
Thanks for letting me vent.
