Lou Holtz (Official Thread)

Do people really take Notre dame that serious anymore?

I guess in the Midwest since their campus is there they have a solid fan base, and the northeast apparently too since all the Irish catholic Americans in nyc and Boston. Maybe the west coast due to the usc rivalry?

All I can say is in the south I don’t think anyone ever thinks about Notre dame as a serious team or program. All the “S-E-C!” Idiot type fans aside (there are some who really adhere to that stereotype certainly), I’d say fans down here take Ohio state as a serious program (whether they love or hate them), and TTUN much less so, but there’s some regard for them.

But Notre dame and Penn state, I can’t say people ever really talk about or consider them. Yet they must have some sort of following based on the amount of media attention they get. As stupid as the sports media can be, I can’t imagine that they’d be yelling into an empty vacuum, listening to their own echo for the sake of it, would they?
Discounting the really olden days, Notre Dame was the most relevant when college football was a regional game, because they had the national religious following and they were on TV more than most other teams were on national broadcasts. Now that everyone can get to the NFL from anywhere and everyone can see every conference play on TV, at this point they're just a fancier version of BYU, except even BYU realized it was finally time to join a conference. I know Dabhole seems to be the one pining for the olden days, but Notre Dame really should be, because every advancement and rule change has made them less and less relevant.

Maybe someone can explain his logic to me. 'ND is a better team. OSU is not a great team. Yet, somehow OSU beat his ND team.' I am missing something. Maybe it is that special ND Football Is Back gene.

He apologized to an alum. Ill take it

We’re talking about Lou Holtz who left every school he was head coach at with major NCAA violations. Yet, these tards at ND erected a statue of the guy.

I love how people even listen to a word a guy like him or Herm Edwards even say.
Here's my problem with Lou Holtz. It started probably at least a decade before Day screamed at him after a win.

He used to be the doofy schmuck that went against Mark May......so you couldn't help but root for him. (Side note: Did you know Mark May blew five guys at Pitt?) But he was always just saying dumb shit for the sake of argument. And he'd be proven right or wrong and just go aww shucks and move on to the next one.

During this time in his life, where the only thing anybody ever thought about him was that he was the silly guy that said dumb shit on TV, he did a radio interview on a non-ESPN channel. He was smart. He knew exactly what he was talking about, and was obviously the smartest guy in the room by leaps and bounds. He made cogent points. He backed them up with data. The data was accurate.

That's when I realized how big of a fucking sellout he was. He just played a stupid mushmouth on TV. He knew infinitely more than Mark May (blew five guys at Pitt) could ever dream of knowing. If the two of them were on an actual debate, he'd wipe the floor with May. But he chooses to let people think he's just a dumb hick.....and even worse. He let's ESPN and Mark May blew five guys at Pitt make money off his dumb act.

All kidding aside, Holtz is basically a more intelligent, non-Jerry Springer version of Finebaum.

Believe it or not, that jackass Pawl actually has done some good journalistic interviews with sports figures before, but his schtick gets a lot more clicks and calls, so he does what he does. Which, to me, makes him an even bigger jackass than what his persona presents because he actually could do better if he tried or cared.

What's worse, be a smart coach who plays a dumb hick for money OR be a dumb hick who plays a smart coach for money.

Holtz vs Cooper. Who you got?
