Lou Holtz (Official Thread)

Because this 2005 USC team hasnt one anything, they have a great offense. However, there have been many teams this year that have taken USC down to the wire. Maybe its just me but this team isnt that great. Notice i said team and not offense. I think Texas, OSU, Auburn, Miami(FL) and on a good day PSU, ND, LSU, and maybe even UGA would take USC down inside thew final minute. If USC had a defense i'd be impressed.

Our 2002 was the exact opposite of the 2005 usc team in this sense:
**APPROXIMATES**
OSU: USC:
Total D: Total O:
2nd 2nd
Total O: Total D:
60th 60th

The 2002 Miami team would smoke this USC team. I thought herbie was smarter than this. Lets see if USC can get outta Pasadena first. If they beat the hell outta Texas i'll agree.

Greatest Offense..probably
Greatest Dynasty..Yes
Greatest "Team"..No way in hell...not yet.

I think we are in agreement that Texas has a good chance of upsetting USC. I pick 'em by 10 points, which isn't a very popular point of view, but there you have it.

I also think we can agree that, as someone who played in that era (having played against some of the Penn State players a few years before), Herbie may be in a better place to judge the two teams than either of us, especially Penn State 1994.

Here are the two teams records. Penn State blew us out but TSUN took 'em to the wire and 5 loss Indiana and Illinois teams did too. Penn State lost 7 games total the previous two years. USC, well that's a bit different.

The schedules also look comparable. Opponents had almost exactly the same winning percentage.

1994 Penn State 70-59-3 54%
2005 USC 84-62 54%

So, I still don't understand, why is Herbie losing his mind if he picks USC. If that's his point of view, well, I think he may be better placed to make the call than us.

You would help us all to understand your point of view by providing a bit more direct substantiation comparing the two teams (i.e., PSU 1994 and USC 2005) and showing us why he was wrong.

Texas won the game...they didn't necessarily prove they were the better team.

We're all expressing opinions, but I want to support Mili's. The Ohio State offense was confused the entire night because Zwick and Smith are such different quarterbacks.

Texas may or may not have so many turnovers because our defense also improved during the year. Even if they didn't, our offense was at least 14 points better by year end.

I believe that the team that came back to beat Michigan would beat Texas or USC. More easily than most people even here would be willing to accept.

Holtz or Alberts

Sure it is true that Holtz is an idiot, but I'll take him any day of the week over the guy he replaced, Trev Alberts who was the biggest Buckeye hater of all time  . At least Hotlz has a reason to push for ND. Alberts just hated us.

Anyone know what acutally happened to him anyway? Why did ESPN can him?

I stand corrected by stats.

I guess im dissapointed with herbie in that ESPN looks like a bunch of amatuers claiming USC as one of the greats already IMO. They need to beat Texas first before I put them on a list like ESPN has done. Talent wise the 1969 OSU team was better than the 2002 team. But IMO, the 2002 team is a better team because they won it all. Thats just the way my thought process works to give you an insight.

BUT...just looking at offense alone, I can in no way see how Texas is as good as USC. I could throw out stats...but they've already been thrown out there. It's not a knock on Texas...they are awesome...USC is just out of this world this year when it comes to offense.
makes it sort of hard to debate something when it's based on pure opinion.

USC played a year's worth of worthless defenses. Why is this not a consideration for why they had incredible? There is definitely a ridiculous amount of talent on that team, but how do you think Spurrier's fun n gun teams would have done w/ the USC schedule?

Instead, playing in the SEC, they threw for 4000 yards, ran for 2000, had two wrs combine for 2200 yds and 28 tds, and went nuts in their final two games (SEC CCG - 45 vs Bama, NC game - 52 vs FSU)

Barlow, you certainly are NOT corrected by statistics. Your opinion is every bit as good as mine or most anyone else here. My point was one of tolerance and I really appreciate the discussion.

I am not sure what is being broadcast in the US but I am watching May and Holtz on GameDay prior to the bowl game.

Could I please just get a definition check here...

Moron: A person of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years and generally having communication and social skills enabling some degree of academic or vocational education. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

Idiot: A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

After listening to Lou Holtz for the last half hour, I am convinced that idiot is incorrect but...

Texas didn't score less than 40 points all year, uh, hello! What defense did they play except Ohio State, "Well they played 11 of them."??? He is not prepared, has no grip on the facts most of the time, and he is embarrassing himself.

The 96 Gators were a great team, no doubt. Wuerffel, Anthony, Hilliard... What a passing game.

And every one tends to overlook just how effective that team was on the ground. In all his years in Gainesville, I think Spurrier only lost one game where they rushed for 100 yards. And that was to Auburn in an unreal barnburner.

I still think, despite their lack of balance, I'd take the 95 Huskers Offense over anybody.

Mark May of all people just called out lou following the clemson game. Holtz once again brought up nd and you could see a smirk on mays face. As soon as May got a chance to speak, he laughed and asked lou if he'd ever make it through a segment without bringing up nd.
