Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

Imagine what Malachi Toney would pull in the portal

Malachi Toney's NIL value is exploding as Hurricanes plan to make freshman centerpiece in 2026 season

Keeping Toney on the roster is a must if Mario Cristobal and the 'Canes are planning a return trip to the CFP

Toney was Miami's "first priority outside of quarterback" for its 2026 roster plan, and keeping him away from the transfer portal -- along with several other key returning contributors -- was paramount toward next year's goal of winning the ACC and getting back to the playoff.

College football's single transfer portal window this cycle closed last week, but players from Miami and Indiana have a five-day NCAA extension to make themselves available if they choose. The additional window begins on Tuesday, and heading into the finale, Indiana had already lost 10 players to the portal while Miami had eight departures with more expected this week.

"Malachi loves it here ... he dreamed of playing here," Michael Irvin told CBS Sports after the game. "I'm not worried about Malachi. We've got a great base of (talent). And we're going to get a (great) quarterback."

Toney's compensation is expected to be in same ballpark of new Texas pass-catcher Cam Coleman, an Auburn transfer this cycle, and Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, among other top-end wide receivers.

"Whatever number you had in mind ... more," one source told CBS Sports prior to Monday's game.

Just sayin': I have no doubt that his family and/or NIL agent has been contacted and offered a good sum of NIL money if he entered the transfer portal and committed to their school by "unofficial representatives" of other schools. He knows what he could get by transferring and Miami will more than match it.

I totally understand wanting the most experienced players as a tool to help winning a natty. But in a world of hypotheticals, where does this end, where does this eventually go? Are we headed for an intra-collegiate system where the P4 schools rotate players down to the “minor leagues” if they don’t make it, and then offer contracts to the juniors and seniors of the the minor league schools?

Not trying to sound old but it has taken a lot of joy out of the game. Money aside, it was cool to see players develop at different schools. To see what recruits were boom or bust. Always felt exciting to see if we recruited “THE one”. Now the fun is looking forward to portal openings.

Florida State fans and media not happy lol good

Ohio State was used as bait for FSU transfers to get more money from Mike Norvell

Fans got their hopes up for nothing

This is the ugly side of the transfer portal that can be downright infuriating. At the same time, it's also something that Ohio State fans can't be upset with Ross Bjork about. We're of course talking about twin brothers Darryll Desir and Mandrell Desir opting to re-sign with Florida State.

Earlier this week, rumors were flying that Ohio State was showing strong interest in the pair of talented defensive linemen. Was a visit to Columbus going to be in the works? Nope, as it was announced on Thursday night that the two had re-signed with the Seminoles and they're not going anywhere. Sorry, but it's clear Ohio State's name was used for a big score financially.

Ohio State fans were played thinking the Desir Twins were eyeing the Buckeyes

When the Desir twins first revealed they were going to be entering the portal, plenty of Florida State fans were ready to go into panic mode. They could not believe that head man Mike Norvell was about to lose the two rising stars on defense.

Several teams were linked as possibilities, with Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of 247Sports quickly mentioning Ohio State as a team to watch. This got the hopes up for many all over Columbus, as both players would have been an incredible addition for Matt Patricia's defense.

Instead, Florida State was able to hang on and there's no question that a massive NIL deal played a large part in the brothers' decision to stay put in Tallahassee for at least one more season. This sucks for Ohio State, but it's the way the business works these days.

I didn't give a shit about those two. We are already set at D line thank you. Jokes on you suckers!

Yea, adding those two would have been welcomed but we look pretty solid, depth wise on the edge this year.

Kenyatta, Zion, Beau, Epi, adding Wilder and Alliegro (although not sure where he's gonna be lining up primarily) is a solid group. Unless you're an All American, that's not exactly an attractive room for a transfer.

You forgot Smith and Russaw who are definitely going to be in the 2 deep. Injury free and we're golden up front and in the secondary. It's the LBs that have to make the jump

if we use it....
More, for sure. I think Laurinaitis used his LBs a bit more last year but how do you take Reese or Styles off the field? Especially when the drop off is dramatic. Look at that room now and how young it is. It's a little scary but Pierce played and played well at times so I'm pretty confident in him we just need more guys to make a big jump.

LJ needs to allow his talented assistants to get in his ear more and rotate more freely up front until we find another Bosa or Young (that's probably never happening) but we can hope. If we get 8 this year up front that can at least be mixed and matched we'll be great again and hopefully healthy come winning time. The schedule is nasty though so winning time might come earlier than we want.

Secondary is reloading. Forget about replacing Downs, he's a unicorn and the time to the next one might be like it was from Tatum until this past year. We've at least had numerous corners that exploded onto the seen so since we've seen that happen I'm hopeful and the room has a lot of talent. The Thorpe award may very well stay in Columbus this year if the corners play to their ability again.

I feel good about the Defense all things considered. I mean fucks sake, losing what we've lost the last two years combined is ridiculous and hopefully this year the Offense makes a big jump in dominance and we get to rest these guys even more.
