I assume a player forfeits his existing scholarship as soon as he enters the portal, right? Or is the portal merely an option and the player can come back if no one else picks it up?

The school is under no obligation to take them back. So yes they forfeit their scholarship

We played against Finn in the Horseshoe last year and I walked away impressed. Finn was a legit star for them. He went 10-19 for 153 yds with 2 TD & 1 INT, plus 70 yards rushing on 7 carries & a TD
