Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Report: Alabama QB Jalen Hurts now in NCAA transfer portal

The player who would be the “biggest free agent in college football history” is one step closer to coming onto the market.

According to 247Sports.com‘s Barton Simmons, Jalen Hurts‘ name is now listed in the NCAA transfer portal system. The move allows other football programs to contact the quarterback without receiving permission from Alabama first.

While the move doesn’t necessarily mean Hurts will definitely transfer — he could always remove his name and return to the Crimson Tide — it has in the past usually ended with the player moving on to another school.

Hurts graduated from Alabama in December, meaning he could move on to another FBS program and be immediately eligible to play in 2019. The upcoming season will be the true junior’s final year of eligibility.

As for potential landing spots? There are a handful of places that make sense, but there’s been a significant amount of speculation over the past few weeks that rival Auburn, which is losing its starting quarterback to the NFL and has no clear-cut replacement in-house, is very much a viable option.

In BYU’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl romp over Western Michigan, Burt ran for a team- and career-high 110 yards on 13 carries, including a 37-yard touchdown run in the third quarter of the 49-18 win. Exactly 18 days later, the running back took to Twitter to announce that, “[a]fter much consideration,” he has decided to transfer from the Cougars.

As Burt will be leaving the football program as a graduate transfer, he would be eligible to play at another FBS school immediately in 2019.

Seems like Maryland would be a natural fit...

Wonder if we take a look at Matt Jones, the grad transfer center from WVU? We've got Josh Myers teed up there but Jones gives immediate, solid starting experience on the OL and may allow us to have the best 5 play. Can't imagine he'd be interesting in coming unless he felt really confident he'd have a starting job, probably at Center if he thinks that's where his future in the NFL is (and Pauline gave him a Rd3 grade before the season). Regardless - feels like someone worth chasing if we've got the spot given our dearth of experience there.

YSU Football: Offensive lineman Jones "could" land with Penguins

It appears Hubbard graduate and West Virginia offensive lineman Matt Jones could be returning home.
Sources tell 21 Sports "there's a very good chance" Jones will transfer to Youngstown State and have one year of eligibility.
He's played center the past two years for the Mountaineer and started in 25 of the last 26 games.
This year he anchored an offensive line that ranked second in the Big 12 and fourth nationally in passing yards.

OU Football: Quarterback Austin Kendall entering transfer portal, exploring options to leave Sooners

Oklahoma quarterback Austin Kendall is entering the transfer portal to explore his future options, a source close to the situation informed the Tulsa World on Friday afternoon.

Kendall has spent the past three seasons on the Sooners’ roster. As a true freshman, he was OU’s backup quarterback to Baker Mayfield. After sitting out a redshirt season, Kendall held the same role for Kyler Murray in 2018.

Kendall, who has already graduated, would be eligible immediately and have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He could transfer or return to Norman.

Kendall’s departure would leave the Sooners with two scholarship quarterbacks: redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler, who isn’t scheduled to arrive on campus until this summer. The San Francisco Chronicle reported on Murray plans to submit his name into the NFL Draft.

Kendall hasn’t had an opportunity to play much for the Sooners. In two seasons, he is 28-of-39 passing for 265 and three touchdowns.

Texas QB Cameron Rising visiting Utah

One program that could potentially pry quarterback Cameron Rising away from Tom Herman and Texas is now known. Horns247 has learned through multiple sources with knowledge of the situation that Rising is taking an official recruiting visit to Utah this weekend.

Rising put his name in the NCAA transfer portal on Dec. 22, this after meetings with Herman where the true freshman and former 247Sports Composite four-star prospect from Newbury Park (Calif.) expressed a desire to explore his options. Herman and the Texas staff made it clear to Rising that they want him to be a part of the program’s future, but Rising went home for Christmas before the reconvened in Austin and departed for the Allstate Sugar Bowl with his name in the portal.

Utah's quarterback situation is one where the path to playing time is easier than how things look on the Forty Acres. While Rising will likely be behind starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger for two more seasons, Utah's Tyler Huntley is entering his senior season with Utes in 2018, which could (in theory) have Rising battling Texas product Jason Shelley (Frisco Lone Star) for the starting nod in the spring and summer of 2020.

Rising and fellow true freshman Casey Thompson both entered the transfer portal on the same weekend. Both quarterbacks, however, were with the Longhorns in New Orleans for the program’s 28-21 win over Georgia inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on New Year’s night and both Herman and co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tim Beck expressed leading up to the game that they would prefer both quarterbacks to stick it out and be members of the roster in 2019.

"We want them to stick around," Herman said when the Longhorns arrived in New Orleans on Dec. 27. "We don't want to lose either one of them. And nowadays in college football, that's their right, and that's something the football oversight committee and transfer oversight committee thought was a necessary next step, and we respect that. We've been very communicative with both families and both young men, and they're happy to be here and happy to be a part of their team. This is the way of the world now, and guys who want to explore their options have the right to do so. We also have the opportunity to communicate with them how important they are to our program.

"I think it would be different if it was a guy who was playing a lot, but these are two kids who were planning on redshirting, even if they were to play in this game (the Sugar Bowl), this year would be a redshirt year,” he added. "I don't think it's any indication of whether they're part of this team or not. I think it's simply guys taking advantage of a new rule. We support them. They know where we stand. We certainly want them back. We feel they are an integral part of our future, but this is the way of the world and where we are."
