Texas quarterback Casey Thompson, who started 10 games and passed for 24 touchdowns this season, entered the transfer portal Friday.

Thompson is leaving after former Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers, one of the top-rated players in the country when he came out of high school after the 2020 season, transferred to Texas.

Texas also signed quarterback Maalik Murphy of Gardena, California, and Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian said the position would be open ahead of the 2022 season. Thompson, an Oklahoma City native, will be a graduate transfer.

Thompson was the backup to Hudson Card for the first two game before taking over the starting role. He passed for 2,113 yards as Texas finished 5-7 in a season the program had its first five-game losing streak since 1956.

Thompson’s six touchdowns passes in an overtime loss to Kansas tied a school record. He had two other games with five TD passes, but also had a mid-season thumb injury that appeared to affect his throwing in several games.

Thompson’s departure leaves Texas with little experience at quarterback. Card won the job over Thompson in training camp but struggled badly in the second game. He played in eight games and got a late-season chance to regain the starting job, but couldn’t unseat Thompson.

Card finished with 590 yards passing and five touchdowns. Ewers did not throw a pass for the Ohio State last season.

Thompson already beat out Card (2021 season) and Murphy is a true Freshman: Sounds like Thompson expects Ewers to be QB1 in 2022.

Makes you wonder though if it doesn't start to be like the NFL where sometimes you are just looking for a serviceable back up.

I'm thinking some guys like this, assuming you'd want them, would be interested in an opportunity for some OSU level NIL and a championship run as a back up/insurance plan?

In 2001? Sure. In 2021? Hard pass. 56% doesn't even register as "serviceable" in this era. Dude is 99th in the NCAA this season, behind such prolific passers as Tanner Morgan, Rocky Lombardi, and Spencer Petras. Heck, Stroud posted 62.4% against Minnesota, Oregon, and Tulsa and half the fan base wanted him gone.

If you've got one scholarship to spend in the portal this offseason and have a need at QB, are you taking a known inconsistent .500 commodity or taking a chance on a Jack Miller or Quinn Ewers or whoever that is probably, at worst, equal to Burmeister, but more likely slightly if not significantly better?

Just sayin': For most student-athletes (like Shayne Simon that haven't played much over 4 years due to injuries), their single biggest achievement while in college that will effect them for the rest of their life is getting their degree. At this point in his life, Shayne should be more interested in getting his degree from Notre Dame than playing a few more downs of football. Now if he has already graduated from Notre Dame and he wants to play football another year or 2 at another school that's a different matter. Play 2 years there; but be sure to come away with a masters degree.

Ohio State walk-on WR Austin Kutscher is also transferring:

It's transfer portal season in college football and Ohio State lost two more players to the portal on Monday. Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Darrion Henry-Young and senior wide receiver Austin Kutscher both entered their names in the transfer portal.

Kutscher, who joined the team as a walk-on in 2018 out of Massillon, Ohio's Washington High School, played two snaps on offense as a senior this past season, coming into the game late against Michigan State and recording no stats. Kutscher was part of a deep wide receiver room that included the likes of Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
