If this guy is coming in as a pretty much free low end very end of the bench depth piece, it's fine. If he ends up having to be someone we have to even slightly rely upon it is bad.

I think you will see a two-tiered approach to the portal for OSU. They need 4 guys to be major contributors, that's the playing tier, and they should have money to invest for those 4. But they could have 6-7 transfers they add because they have lost so many depth pieces, so they'll probably need 3 more for the bench tier. So in other words, let them add 3 guys who arent very accomplished for the depth tier. If they add 6-7 players that haven't scored around 10 ppg, then I would be worried. They should get at least two double figure scorers.Ohio State, even back to Holtmann, treats transfers like it’s 15-20 years ago. Just looking for backups and eventual grad assistants to fill out the bench.
Diebler is clearly a good relationship/recruiting guy and I’d say an average coach. But this is where the entire program and Athletic Department have to make a shift in mindset and resources.
I don’t have much hope.

Some of the reports last year about Cupps were crazy - I know Dan Dakich said he was getting $600K from OSU. Who knows what the truth is, but I think every single guy OSU has seen enter the portal aside from Royal weren't really good candidates for OSU to give NIL to, and I think some or all of them are entering the portal because they wanted more money from OSU. Without unlimited funds, you have to make some tough choices, if that means cutting the NIL that a player like Cupps was getting in order to help replace Bruce Thornton with a premier guard, you have to do it. If a player like Cupps stays for the scholarship plus COA, great, if he leaves, well that frees up money for someone else who might contribute more. I am OK with all of those guys in the portal transferring aside from Royal, who has significant value & you have to add a good player in the portal to replace his production.I'm not sure how true it is but people were claiming that Cupps and White were getting way more NIL money than they had any business getting. If true replacing those guys with essentially free depth pieces (Brown falls into this category) is completely fine and then you focus that money on bigger fish.

The truth is even the best teams generally only play 7-8 really good players at the end of the year, and no one is playing the guys that are 10-15 on the depth chart. Right now they have 4 guys that figure in the regular playing group - Mobley (assuming he comes back), Thompson, Bynum, Ojianwuna. As I said, I think you want to have 8 really good players, so with 6-7 open spots on the roster not every guy OSU is going to add via the portal now is going to be someone that fans should be expecting production from.
I have been chilling till the dust settles for two years.I feel bad for a guy like Brown because he's a Columbus local and Ohio State is probably his dream school; he likely is coming in for very little if anything to be a far end depth piece but if that's the first transfer we get people are going to be shitting all over it. We are filling a lot of slots so everyone should chill until the dust settles and the roster is complete.

For sure. OSU fans have gotten very bitter and toxic when it comes to the men's basketball program, some people are just tired of mediocrity and want to burn it all down. Diebler will get criticized by some folks no matter what he does. With like 7 spots to fill, it's not like they only need a couple of guys and can easily fill the spots with a linear process based on the hierarchy of importance. Of course you spend more time working on recruiting the key rotation guys, but as long as it's not seriously taking away from their ability to recruit the playing tier, there's nothing wrong with also recruiting the depth tier at the same time.I feel bad for a guy like Brown because he's a Columbus local and Ohio State is probably his dream school; he likely is coming in for very little if anything to be a far end depth piece but if that's the first transfer we get people are going to be shitting all over it. Per 11W, we're talking to this guy: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/5175058/devin-vanterpool. UK is as well. Seems like at least a potentially higher-end option to swing at.That’s fair but it just speaks to backwards prioritization and resources. Even just as a program image.
I’m sure he’s not going to make much more than a scholarship + entry level salary but go fill spots 10-13 or whatever in May or June or whenever the portal ends. We sure seem to only get “end of bench spots” that turn into Gabe Cupps getting Big Ten minutes.
Other teams will be hosting difference makers or who knows a potential Big Ten Player of the Year (hello Yaxel) and this is our first swing.
Again if this guy was anything but an end of a bench guy I'd agree, but he's not. And it literally doesn't matter if it's the first swing or last swing, when you find someone who fits a role, you fill the role. Your argument makes zero sense. That’s fair but it just speaks to backwards prioritization and resources. Even just as a program image.
