Givens was actually a 4-star, top-100 recruit in the same class as Juni Mobley & according to some services he was actually rated higher than Mobley. He has the right tools, he just has to have the right mental approach, work on his game & become more efficient. He took some steps forward this past season. If he can make some more strides, he could be a real player. If you compare and contrast Givens vs who he is effectively replacing, Gabe Cupps, obviously Givens has a much higher upside, but he has a lower floor than Cupps, who at least reliably executed his role within the team concept. This is a boom or bust type of pickup - nothing wrong with rolling the dice on upside with a guy who right now looks like the 8th man. This season, Givens scored 20 at Ole Miss and 18 at Mississippi State, so he has had some games vs P5 competition where he has been productive; meanwhile, Cupps had 17 scoreless outings for the Buckeyes last season & never scored in double figures once.Givens is about the best we could have realistically hoped for that backup PG type role. Hopefully he can get that runover rate down but other than that he's definitely an upgrade over Cupps.
