Longer school day the answer?

Extending the school day hurts high school students. Many of us have not only tough school days already, but have to deal with sports practices, and jobs. I value the free time that I get, and making the kids stay at school longer each day only puts on more stress.

you need to print out what you just wrote, save it, and look at it in 7 years when you are working your first real job. i would give anything to go back to the "stress" of high school, four hours of golf practice, and three hours of homework with about fifteen hours of "work" mixed in. those were the days!

With all do respect, fuck that. I get paid for my time now.

Keep in mind, I said "with all due respect".

Hell I had to deal with National Guard drills/activities my senior year of High School along with playing and lettering in 3 sports and taking 2 AP courses my senior year.

Just wait till ya hit your first job with an impossible deadline or quota....you'll love it

Seen and not heard.

A longer school day should allow for more "play" time to be built in which then could help with the attention span issue. Hell, when I was in elementary school, we had a 15-20 minute recess in the morning, another one after lunch, and a 10 minute recess circa 1:45 pm. When my kids hit elementary school, they only have a 15 minute recess at the end of lunch. This bothers me a little bit. So if the result is a less harried pace which then has more "play" time for the kids (like when I was a youngin) then I think a slightly longer school day is a good idea.

A longer school day, for me at least, is only relevant to the elementary and middle schools, but moreso with elementary school. Hence none of the issues that you mentioned for high school students are relevant. (And I don't mean that to diminish the issues you raised, just that for me I wouldn't consider lengthening the school day for high school students.) What could be done to help hs students is starting the school day later than what many districts currently do. Classes beginning at 7:30 am is ridiculously early for a hs student.

Only 15 minutes recess? That is disturbing. Shorter recess, coke machines in school, and more discretionary (junk food) options at lunch. What could go wrong?

How long is the school day and school year in the US these days?

In South Africa, kids have the following holiday periods when they do not attend school.

Summer holidays - 6 weeks in December and January
Autumn holidays - 2 weeks in April
Winter holiday - 3 weeks in June/July
Spring holiday - 1 week in September

So, they are in school 39 weeks of the year. The school day varies by year but is typically from 7:45am to 2pm or 3pm, with required extracurricular classes (sport, dance, music, etc) taking place another hour or two a day. Kids wear uniforms.

Required extracurricular isn't exactly "extra". Don't even get me started on uniforms.

Did I mention that my kids also only have a six week summer vacation? I feel bad for them, it's like they are being cheated. I probably didn't mention the reading classes after school either, it's no wonder they don't like school, or have much care to pay attention when they are there. I lost that battle, suppose all i can do is at least have empathy...

Block scheduling fixes everything.

4 classes a day at 90 mins apiece which allows for more one on one learning and just bascially understanding shit better

We have a 7 hour school day 7:55 to 2:55 with 25 mins for lunch and we also every wendesday have late start with school going from 10 to 3

Only thing id like changed would be to start school earlier at like 725 so we get out at 230 and have an extra jump on practices and work and such

I think that 35 hours of school, 18 hours of work, 6 or 7 hours of workout regimen (in the offseason), and then another 7 or so hours of studying is a respectable time committment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that I have it hard, or that it gets easier down the road, but committing 60+ hours a week to school/sports/work is definitely a handfull, especially when you have multiple AP classes to study for.

Not to mention during football season when I have 3 hour practices mon-thur, pre-game/game for 6.5 hours friday, and then saturday film.
