Longer school day the answer?

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- School principal Robin Harris used to see the clock on her office wall as the enemy, its steady ticking a reminder that time was not on her side.
But these days Harris smiles when the clock hits 1:55 p.m. There are still two more hours in the school day -- two more hours to teach math and reading, art and drama.
Harris runs Fletcher-Maynard Academy, a combined public elementary and middle school in Cambridge, Mass., that is experimenting with an extended, eight-hour school day.
"It has sort of loosened up the pace," Harris said. "It's not as rushed and frenzied."
The school, which serves mostly poor, minority students, is one of 10 in the state experimenting with a longer day as part of a $6.5 million program.

My kids already go for an 8 hour day, personally (they are both in elementary school) I think it is too damn long. It is too long to expect kids to keep paying attention and behaving, hell I keep getting suggestions from my kids teacher to put my kid on ridelin (sp), he is a 10 yr old boy, not an adult and I will be damned.... better stop before I get started....

Where do your kids go to school were they have an 8 hour school day?

Just out of curiosity, what do you see is the problem with longer school day instead of a longer year?

Kids having a three month break leads to the first 2-3 months of school catching up concepts that were forgotten during the summer.

I would rather extend the school year instead of the school day.
But if you extended the school year, you wouldn't be able to contribute so much insightful discussion to BP.

    Fuck. Nevermind.

Maybe we should just make the teachers teach for the seven hours they are there! :tongue2:

I'm all for longer school days if it cuts out our pre-school + after-school daycare bill. I think kids should spend more time at school doing their work and less time at home doing the homework. It's a bunch of BS that my wife and/or I have to blow an hour or two of our nights to help the six year old along with spelling or math.

I don't know about thump, but for me the longer day would not be good because a few reasons. One was pointed out was teh kids attention span, for the younger kids. They are going to get tired and be less productive at the end of the day.

For high school kids you will run into problems with if the kids can work a part time job or if they are in sports how late do they end up being there for practice and when would they do homework?
