More DispatchFirst, the only scorer the Ohio State men?s basketball team has been able to count on lately, Deshaun Thomas, missed eight of his first 11 shots from the field.
Next, foul trouble found starting center Evan Ravenel, and his replacement, Amir Williams, gave up two quick scores inside.
Finally, guard Aaron Craft stuck his nose where it didn?t belong one too many times and suffered a gash above his right eye that would need 10 stitches to close.
In recent years, that hat trick might have created a dilemma for coach Thad Matta, who had a difficult time looking beyond the first sub on his bench.
Not this season, apparently.
?Coach Matta told us from the beginning of the year that he wasn?t going to do like he did in the past,? sophomore LaQuinton Ross said. ?This year he told us there was going to be a lot of in and out.?
So there has been, and yesterday the Buckeyes? depth overwhelmed Long Beach State in their 89-55 victory in Value City Arena.
Thomas heated up in the second half and led No.7-ranked Ohio State (6-1) with a game-high 18 points, but it was the reserves who produced a season-high 37 points. Ross had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Shannon Scott had nine assists and one turnover, and little-used Trey McDonald contributed some needed post defense during a first-half run in which the Buckeyes began putting distance between themselves and the 49ers.
In the past four games, the bench is averaging 29.8 points per game, Ross is averaging 14.5 points and 6.3 rebounds, and Scott?s assist-turnover differential is 28-3.
?We?re going to see a lot of situations . . . (where the starters) are going to be in foul trouble at some point during the season,? guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. said. ?But when you?ve got guys who have had opportunities to get in and play and make an impact so that they?re comfortable . . . we don?t lose a step. We can change at all positions and we have a lot of guys on this team who are capable of making plays. When you?ve got confidence that that can happen, we can be a scary team.?
