It's there to fill time. It's more interesting than ping pong or air rifle, so they can justify showing it. At the same time, nobody cares about it enough to object to them editing it to within an inch of its life so that it takes up the exact amount of time that's leftover after they account for showing all the swimming, gymnastics and human interest pieces.

Michael Phelps' mom, Phleps was racing in the 200 fly finals, and he was leading as they were coming to the end but a south african beat him at the last second, and for whatever reason she thought he had won it...you can see her sister yells to her "no, he got 2nd"

Because he would have won it but timed his reach wrong while the other guy did one more stroke.
