Little Known Fact Thread

Add your own.

Mine- If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

Sadly, I knew that.

Another one I heard...The saying going the whole nine yards dates back to WW2. The bomber gunners in WW2 had a belt of ammo that was 27 feet. So, when a gunner emptied his entire belt he went the whole nine yards.

Another stupid one I actually got on a job interview. Why are manholes round? Because it is the only shape that cannot fall through the same sized shape.

Please explain. I umpired baseball for over ten years and never heard that.

I assume this goes with runners interference. Similar to if you got hit by a ball while running between the bases. I believe the only sanctuary from this rule is foul ground. Hence why coaches teach players to always lead off third base in foul ground.

You never see this rule come into play because a guy on second while a ball is hit normally has a leadoff and is not on the base.

To add, if you swing and you are hit by the pitch...it's a strike. I actually saw this happen in the majors.

Didn't read the whole thread, but this is false.

If a ball is shot right back up the middle and you jump back onto second base to be safe... and the ball hits you... you're OUT... the base is not an island of safety.
If you are a runner and in fair territory and a batted ball hits you, you are out. The bases are in fair territory and not islands of safety. That's why you teach runners at third to always come down the line in foul territory.

This is a good one to pose as a bet... and win a beer at the pub...

Almost all, if not all zippers are made by a company named YKK. Look at your zippers.

It's not a company, it's just a standard for design. All zippers designed "YKK style" should be compatible with the others. Say like you want to zip up your fleece to your Columbia or North Face Jacket...it can be done as long as the zippers are both YKK.

I drive by a YKK zipper factory every day. It is a Company.

In 1960, YKK entered the United States zipper market as a small sales and assembly operation. Originating in New York's garment district, YKK (U.S.A.) Inc. is now this country's number one supplier of fasteners. In Macon, Georgia, 12 modern plants produce YKK USA zippers in 1,500 styles, in 427 standard colors, and in as many special colors as you need. Does it really take so many plants to make a zipper? Yes, if it's a YKK zipper. YKK USA's manufacturing process is vertically integrated. Starting with the Brass Wire Plant, where our own brass is produced from high grade copper and zinc, we make zipper teeth (elements) and sliders. From tiny chips, we make polyester to produce tape, coil, and thread. We also extrude and dye our own yarn. We control every step of the manufacturing process to ensure quick response, prompt delivery, and the highest possible quality at the lowest possible cost. Our R&D efforts are continuous, and our innovation is unmatched in the industry. Plus, we work in tandem with customers to develop the best manufacturing options for installing our fasteners into end-use goods.
At YKK , we fully understand that our fasteners are not end-use items in themselves; rather, they are critical components within our customers' products.
Where can you find genuine YKK products? Our worldwide network, with locations in 50+ countries and liaison relationships throughout the world, offers you the full capabilities of YKK sourcing solutions. A total commitment to customer service and satisfaction is supported by extensive inventories of bonafide YKK products, not counterfeits. When you need solutions, YKK is the right connection, worldwide. For more information about your YKK connection, call toll-free 1-888-YKK-INFO.

A few underappreciated facts:

While it is true that there is no time like the present, it is equally true that there is no time like last Tuesday.

It is sobering to realize everything is in one direction or another from Kansas City.

Half way around the world is much further away than all the way around the world.

Cosmopolitian though they were, the Vikings had no first-hand knowledge of toast.
