Rivals Updated Rankings

We have hit on Bemoll's rise and Schoenhoft's fall in the Rivals 100 rankings, but Rivals has also updated their position rankings as well. Some current commitments of note are:

Ryan Williams #10 WDE 3***
Brian Hartline #31 WR 3***
Malcolm Jenkins Unranked

The other recruits had already been previosly ranked. That gives us 9 commits of which 2 are 5*****, 4 are 4****, 2 are 3***, and Jenkins is unranked. Previously unranked recruits of note include

Doug Worthington #5 SDE 4****
Lawrence Wilson #12 WDE 3***
Andre Mathis #8 ILB 4****
Rico McCoy #15 OLB 4****
Javon Ringer #20 RB 3*** (highest ranked 3*** RB)
Ronnie Wilson #14 OG 3*** (and moving up almost daily)
Andre Amos #29 WR 3***
Freddie Lennix #19 Ath 3***
Mikell Simpson #14 RB 4****
Rashawn Jackson #31 RB 3***
Sean Smalls #48 CB 3***

This does not include some previously unranked players for which tOSU currently leads or has a good chance of landing (AMW, Wells, etc...). This could be a very special class when all is said and done.

Football

Top football players: No. 2-25
By Tom Markowski / The Detroit News

Terrance Taylor 6-1, 285, sr., DT-G Muskegon

2. A four-year starter on defense, Taylor, as a wrestler, finished third in the state as a heavyweight and won the state power lifting championship. He has been offered scholarships by Louisiana State, Michigan, Michigan State and Nebraska, among others.

Antonio Bass 6-2, 197, sr., QB-FS Jackson

3. A left-hander who wears No. 7 a la Michael Vick, Bass runs the 40 in 4.4 seconds, bench presses 350 pounds, has a 34-inch vertical jump and plays baseball. He rushed for 13 touchdowns last season and passed for 10. Bass has narrowed his choices to eight schools: Southern California, Florida, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse, Notre Dame and Louisiana State.

Terrence Blevins 6-1, 230, sr., RB-LB Detroit Denby

4. A three-year varsity player, Blevins rushed for 1,006 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He also made 87 tackles. A big back with speed, Blevins has been timed at 10.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He’s been offered scholarships by Toledo and Indiana, other Big Ten schools, including Michigan State, have Blevins high on their list.

Chris McLaurin 6-3, 228, sr., DE-TE Orchard Lake St. Mary’s

5. Committed to Michigan. A three-year starter, McLaurin, a rush end, had 11 1/2 sacks last season. He plays basketball and competes in track and field. “His biggest attribute is he plays smart,” Coach George Porritt said.

Otis Wiley 6-2, 185, sr., FS-WR Flint Carman-Ainsworth

6. Committed to Michigan State. Wiley is fast (4.4 in the 40) and can jump (a hurdler in track). He’ll likely play defense at MSU. He had 86 tackles and seven interceptions last season. He also had scholarship offers from Purdue and Indiana.

Talonnie Russell 5-10, 170, sr., WR Detroit De Porres

7. A three-year starter, Russell had 20 receptions as a junior and 30 as a sophomore. His elusiveness allows him to make big plays out of a short completion. He runs the 40 in 4.5 seconds. He has received offers from Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, with North Carolina and Michigan State also interested.

Evan Sharpley 6-2, 205, sr., QB Marshall

8. Committed to Notre Dame. A three-year starter, Sharpley also excels in basketball and baseball. He threw for 1,998 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. He has great arm strength and good mobility.

Ryal Allison 6-4, 205, sr., WR-DB Lake Orion

9. Committed to Michigan State. A three-year starter on offense, Allison runs the 40 in 4.4 seconds and is a hurdler in track. Last season, he had 30 receptions for an 18-yard average and five touchdowns. Also received offers from UCLA and Boston College.

Andrew Hawken 6-2, 220, sr., RB-LB-DE-DB Grandville

10. Committed to Michigan State. A three-year starter on offense, Hawken rushed for 1,100 yards and had 488 yards in receptions last season. He runs the 40 in 4.6 seconds and also plays baseball.

Ross Weaver 6-1, 190, sr., DB Southfield

11. Committed to Michigan State. A three-year starter, Weaver runs the 40 in 4.45 seconds. He frequently plays free safety but will likely play cornerback at MSU. He had 65 tackles and two interceptions last season.

David Grimes 5-10, 165, sr., WR-DB Detroit De Porres

12. Committed to Notre Dame. A two-year starter on offense, Grimes runs the 40 in 4.5 seconds and helped De Porres win a state track title last spring. While not as elusive as Talonnie Russell, Grimes is more sure-handed and runs more precise routs.

Trevor Anderson 6-2, 250, sr., DE-G Detroit Crockett

13. A three-year starter on defense, Anderson is a tremendous pass rusher. He runs the 40 in just under 4.7 seconds and competes in the shot put in track. A handful of Big Ten schools are interested. Purdue and Notre Dame have shown the most interest.

Joel Nitchman 6-5, 275, sr., OT-DT Kalamazoo Hackett

14. Committed to Michigan State. Coach Jim Coady said Nitchman is the “hardest-working player I’ve had in 29 years of coaching.” Coady said Nitchman might move to center at MSU.

Adam Beal 6-2, 300, sr., OT-DT Detroit King

15. A two-year starter, Beal, who is just 16 years old, could be a sleeper in this class. He can bench press 225 pounds 32 times. He’s being recruited by Big Ten and Mid-American Conference schools.

Jermaine Jenkins 6-2, 205, sr., QB-DB Saginaw

15. He made his name as a quarterback by passing for 1,500 yards last season, but Jenkins is likely to play defense in college. He finished second in the state in the 400. Jenkins has received offers from MAC schools; Big Ten schools are also interested.

Kevin Kilgo 6-5, 250, sr., TE-DE Sterling Heights Stevenson

17. A three-year starter on offense, Kilgo suffered a knee injury at the end of last season and colleges (Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana) are waiting to see how he performs in the next two months. He had 20 receptions last season.

Aubrey Pleasant 6-0, 205, sr., RB-WR-DB-LB, Montrose

18. A transfer from Flint Northern, Pleasant runs the 40 in 4.51 seconds and bench presses 350 pounds. He also plays basketball and competes in track. Wisconsin and Illinois have offered.

Chris Jurek 6-3, 265, sr., C Southfield-Lathrup

19. A three-year starter, Jurek has tremendous leverage and quick feet. He has been offered scholarships by Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green. Purdue and Northwestern are interested.

Malcolm Arrington 6-2, 222, sr., RB-LB Orchard Lake St. Mary’s

20. A three-year starter on both sides, Arrington rushed for 500 yards and had six sacks last season. He also plays basketball and competes in track. Indiana has offered a scholarship. Stanford has offered an official visit.

Cameron Bradfield 6-5, 245, sr., DE Grand Rapids Creston

21. A returning starter on defense, Bradfield didn’t play offense last season but might play that position in college. Indiana has offered a scholarship. “He’s a diamond in the rough,” Coach Lincoln Coleman said.

Emmanuel Southern 6-3, 210, sr., TE-DE Saginaw

22. Southern has been used more on offense and tight end will probably be the position he’ll play in college. He had 20 receptions this past season and showed glimpses of being a big-play receiver. He has received a few offers from MAC schools.

Nick Lawrence 6-3, 220, sr., LB-FB Brighton

23. Perhaps not a high Division I type of recruit, Lawrence is a terrific high school player because of his aggressive style and punishing tackles. He has been offered a scholarship by Eastern Michigan.

Mike Koster 6-3, 210, sr., WR-DB-P Lowell

24. A three-year starter on offense, Koster owns the state career receptions record with 178. He’s closing in on 3,000 receiving yards. Grand Valley State has offered a scholarship and many Division I schools have Koster on their list.

Akim Sanders 6-2, 195, sr., DB-WR Detroit Crockett

25. Predominantly a defensive player to this point, Sanders is an aggressive defender who runs the 40 in 4.48 seconds. More experience on the offensive side could have recruiters looking at Sanders as a receiver. Cincinnati has offered a scholarship.

The Post-Gazette's top Pennsylvania college prospects

Wednesday, August 25, 2004
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

1. Marques Slocum

Philadelphia St. John Neumann

Pos: OG/DT Ht: 6-6 Wt: 330

Scouting: Excellent movement for a "big man." Runs the 40 in 5.1 seconds. Slocum has been dominant offensively and defensively. He would like to play defense in college, even though his size makes him more suited to be an offensive lineman. Had nine sacks last season, but is most valuable as a run-stopper. Slocum has dozens of offers. Some of his favorites are Michigan, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, LSU, Virginia and Boston College.

Jeffrey Lowe, Harrisburg Patriot News
Harrisburgs Mikell Simpson draws comparisons to former Virginia Tech standout Kevin Jones.

2. Justin King

Gateway

Pos: CB Ht: 6-0 Wt: 185

Scouting: The top prospect in Western Pennsylvania, but also has a national reputation. The Sporting News/Student Sports and Rivals100.com rank him among the top 10 players in the country. Future is on defense. Top three schools are Michigan, Penn State and Florida. Next in line are Southern California, Ohio State and Miami. Plans to graduate after fall semester and be at a college for the spring semester. Has outstanding speed and also is talented running back. Had 1,763 yards on 214 carries as a junior and scored 31 TDs. Made Post-Gazette Fabulous 22.

3. Callahan Bright

Rosemont Harriton

Pos: DL Ht: 6-4 Wt: 320

Scouting: Bright has more than 60 scholarship offers and is one of the most sought-after defensive recruits in the country. He said he will take his five official visits to Miami (Fla.), Louisiana State, Southern California, Texas A & M and Nebraska. Bright, who can bench press 390 pounds and squat more than 700 pounds, is also agile for his size and has the ability to get to the quarterback on pass plays. Runs a 4.9 40. Has a brother, Eugene, who played for Purdue in 2003.

4. Andre Mathis

Erie Cathedral Prep

Pos: ILB Ht: 6-2 Wt: 230

Scouting: Erie Cathedral Prep has a handful of Division I prospects this season, and Mathis is the best of the bunch. A hard-hitter who had 90 tackles last season and 2 1/2 sacks. Also a good receiver. He's one of the reason Erie Cathedral Prep could turn out to be one of the top Class AAAA teams on the western side of the state.

5. Mikell Simpson

Harrisburg

Pos: RB/DB Ht: 6-1 Wt: 195

Scouting: Runs a 4.3 40. Many compare Simpson to former Cardinal O'Hara High School and Virginia Tech star Kevin Jones, who was the first round pick of the Detroit Lions in the latest NFL draft. Simpson only gained 862 yards last season, but did so on 88 carries and scored 15 touchdowns. More than a dozen colleges, including Pitt, UCLA, Syracuse, West Virginia and Nebraska, have offered him scholarships. Simpson realizes he's a big-time recruit, and has said, "I'm not going to play basketball this year because I have to concentrate on getting stronger for college football."

Jim Middlekauff
Kyle Newell: Plays against North Hills Sept. 4.
Click photo for larger image.

6. Kyle Newell

Bethlehem Catholic

Pos: DL Ht: 6-5 Wt: 230

Scouting: A very agile lineman who likes to put pressure on the offense from the end of the line. Newell has 10 scholarship offers -- including Penn State, Nebraska, Maryland and West Virginia -- but says he will not make a college decision until after the high school season. Newell is a shy young man who isn't interested in the limelight that comes with being a big-time college recruit. "I just like to play football," he said. "I kind of just deal with all the recruiting stuff, but I can say that I don't necessarily like all the attention." WPIAL fans can see him when Bethlehem Catholic plays North Hills Sept. 4 at Gateway.

7. Dave McClain

Doylestown Central Bucks South

Pos: OL Ht: 6-5 Wt: 327

Scouting: A Maryland recruit, McClain is a mammoth player who will play guard for Ralph Friedgen's Terrapins. Ballooned up to more than 360 pounds during the offseason but has gotten rid of the excess weight and said, "I'm going to stay at where I am weight-wise and have been working hard to turn a lot of that fat into muscle." McClain will be playing for the newly-formed Central Bucks South this season, after playing for Central Bucks East his first three seasons.

8. Lamar McPherson

Wyncote Bishop McDevitt

Pos: RB/SS Ht: 5-10 Wt: 195

Scouting: One of the most interesting stories in the state, McPherson played in only two games last season because of a broken left fibula. Even so, Syracuse was high on him and the two-way star committed to the Orange in April. Had offers from Michigan State, North Carolina and Rutgers. His leg is completely healed for this season. Can run the 40 in 4.4.

9. Shane Brooks

Duquesne

Pos: RB Ht: 5-11 Wt: 220

Scouting: Class A running backs are often overlooked by major colleges. But by mid-summer, Brooks had 14 scholarship offers. Pitt, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Syracuse are among the schools that have offered. Virginia might be his favorite. "I just like what they're doing down there with their program, but I'm still open," Brooks said. Has power and quickness. In college, could be a halfback or maybe grow into a fullback. Rushed for 1,589 yards on 181 carries as a junior.

10. Steve Slaton

Fairless Hills Conwell-Egan Catholic

Pos: RB Ht: 5-10 Wt: 185

Scouting: Had scholarship offers from Maryland, Indiana, North Carolina and West Virginia and verbally committed to Maryland this past weekend. Slaton is just as comfortable bouncing the play to the outside as he is cutting it up and taking on a linebacker. Says that he has visited Penn State, and although the Nittany Lions have not offered a scholarship, he wouldn't be surprised if they extended an offer after the first few games of the season.

11. Sean Lee

Upper St. Clair

Pos: RB/DB Ht: 6-3 Wt: 220

Scouting: Excellent athlete who also excels at basketball. Football is his future sport, though. West Virginia, Iowa and Duke are his top three choices and all have offered him a scholarship. Indiana, Miami (Ohio) also have offered. Excellent student with 3.8 grade-point average. Plays DB for Upper St. Clair, but colleges are projecting him to be a linebacker. Also will be Upper St. Clair's starting tailback this season.

12. Jason Kacinko

Penn-Trafford

Pos: OT Ht: 6-6 Wt: 300

Scouting: Never played football until freshman year. Was a swimmer. Now he is making a big splash as one of Western Pennsylvania's best linemen. Moves well. Has offers from Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, Maryland, North Carolina and Wisconsin, among others. Pitt, Maryland and Wisconsin seem to be his top choices.

13. David Harvey

Penn Hills

Pos: WR Ht: 6-1 Wt: 180

Scouting: Has run a 4.35 40. Also plays defensive back, but most colleges like him as a receiver. Caught 35 passes last season and averaged 18 yards a reception. Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Iowa and Georgia Tech are among the schools that have offered scholarships. Also starting guard on Penn Hills' PIAA championship basketball team.

14. John Pelusi

Pittsburgh Central Catholic

Pos: TE/DE Ht: 6-3 Wt: 235

Scouting: Has grown three inches and added 75 pounds since transferring from Shady Side Academy after his freshman season. A two-way starter on Central Catholic's WPIAL Class AAAA championship team last season. Most colleges like him as a tight end. Pitt, West Virginia, Boston College, Connecticut, Stanford and Northwestern have offered. His father, John Sr., played on Pitt's 1976 national championship team. Likes Pitt, but also seems to like Boston College.

15. Zack Anderson

Prospect Park Interboro

Pos: OT Ht: 6-6 Wt: 265

Scouting: The younger brother of former Pitt offensive lineman Bryan Anderson. Zack has four scholarship offers including Pitt, Purdue and Virginia and said he expects offers from Maryland and West Virginia. Although his brother is a former Panther, Pitt isn't necessarily the front-runner. "Bryan is Bryan and I'm me," he said. Runs a 5.0 40.

16. Kurt Mattes

Plymouth Wyoming Valley West

Pos: OL Ht: 6-6 Wt: 270

Scouting: Excellent movement for a big player. Has six scholarship offers including Pitt, Northwestern and Virginia. He said he's working hard to put on an additional 15 to 20 pounds and has the ability to play any offensive line spot. Mattes is never a liability in the classroom and has a 4.1 grade point average and has scored 1,420 on the SAT. "I want to go somewhere where the education is something that is a big focus along with the football program," Mattes said.

17. R.C. Lagomarsino

Lansdale Catholic

Pos: RB Ht: 5-11 Wt: 180

Scouting: Had sensational junior season, rushing for 2,052 yards on 224 carries and also found the end zone 24 times. Pitt, Northwestern and Purdue have offered scholarships, but he should get additional offers after college coaches get to see more film on him following the first few games of the season. A versatile athlete, Lagomarsino also returns kicks and punts. Runs the 40 in 4.4. Has a 4.0 grade point average and has scored better than 1,200 on the SAT.

18. Ryan Hamilton

Newtown Council Rock North

Pos: SS/LB Ht: 6-2 Wt: 205

Scouting: His father, Kevin, played football for Navy in the late-1970s. Hamilton has been offered a scholarship by West Virginia and Northwestern and says he expects Penn State and Boston College to offer in the near future. He is a hard hitter who might bulk up and play outside linebacker in college.

19. Will Barker

The Haverford School

Pos: OT Ht: 6-7 Wt: 275

Scouting: By mid-July, the University of Virginia had verbal commitments from 19 recruits. One of them was Barker. The Cavaliers were the first school to offer him a scholarship and he jumped at it. He has family from Virginia. Also plays on the defensive line, but future definitely is on offense. Runs the 40 in 5.1.

20. Bill Stull

Seton-LaSalle

Pos: QB Ht: 6-3 Wt: 190

Scouting: Might be the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the state. Had big junior season, leading the WPIAL in passing yardage, completing 154 of 256 passes for 2,262 yards and 22 TDs. He also threw 13 interceptions. Has added 15 pounds since last year. Kentucky, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Miami (Ohio) are among the schools that have offered. Mississippi also might offer when Stull makes an official visit there in September. Will also visit Kentucky in September.

21. Adam Hearns

Lansdale North Penn

Pos: QB Ht: 6-0 Wt: 185

Scouting: North Penn had a number of talented players last year as the Knights won the PIAA Class AAAA title. But Hearns was one of the best. Completed 60 of 110 for 1,201 yards and 13 TDs. Only threw one interception. Also rushed for 966 yards. Not real big, but had Division I offers. Committed to Syracuse in July, turning down offers from Temple, Connecticut and Purdue. Also plays defensive back.

22. Jose Cruz

Johnstown Bishop McCort

Pos: TE Ht: 6-5 Wt: 240

Scouting: A versatile athlete who also is a talented basketball player. Runs a 4.9 40. Cruz is headed for a college better known for basketball, but he hopes to make a mark in football. Committed this summer to North Carolina. Also had offers from Boston College, Indiana and Akron.

23. Nate Hartung

Butler

Pos: OL Ht: 6-3 Wt: 410

Scouting: Considering Hartung's size and strength, some colleges believe he has great potential. But many schools aren't recruiting him because they believe his weight is a problem. Has offers from Syracuse, West Virginia, Kansas, Akron and Temple. Would love to go to Notre Dame, but doesn't have offer. Plays center on offense and nose guard on defense. It's hard to believe there is anyone in the country as strong as Hartung. Has bench pressed 500 pounds.

24. Ernest "Mick" Williams

Monessen

Pos: LB Ht: 6-2 Wt: 250

Scouting: Williams has been a fixture on Monessen's team since he became a starter near the end of his freshman year. Colleges like him as a linebacker, but he also has been a force at fullback for Monessen. He will combine with halfback Quinton Martin for a formidable one-two punch. Has offers from Pitt, West Virginia, Akron, Iowa and Indiana.

25. Jarmal Ruffin

Scotland School

Pos: LB/WR Ht: 6-3 Wt: 195

Scouting: Has told the schools that are recruiting him that he wants a shot to play both ways in college. Wisconsin is the only college to offer a scholarship so far. Ruffin said he is also very interested in Pitt, Penn State and Maryland and believes that all three will offer. Strong for his size, he completed 16 repetitions of 185 pounds at the Nike All-American Camp at Penn State in the spring.

26. Frank Carduff

Shenandoah Valley

Pos: OL Ht: 6-4 Wt: 285

Scouting: Carduff had offers from Big East schools West Virginia and Connecticut, but committed to WVU on July 20. He is agile for a big player, running the 40 in 5.1. Also versatile, he played guard last season, but figures to play tackle as a senior. Although he will play football in college, Carduff has been playing basketball for the Pocono Stars AAU program the past few summers.

27. Jerry Butler

Philadelphia George Washington

Pos: RB/DB Ht: 5-8 Wt: 165

Scouting: A small, but elusive running back who rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a junior. Has excellent speed, running the 40 in 4.35 seconds. His size is a concern for some schools, but still has a handful of offers. West Virginia and Wisconsin are among the schools that have offered scholarships.

28. Eugene Jarvis

Pittsburgh Central Catholic

Pos: RB Ht: 5-7 Wt: 165

Scouting: The Post-Gazette Player of the Year is back for his senior season, a little bigger and stronger (added 15 pounds). Rushed for 1,683 yards on 225 carries and scored 39 touchdowns. Also caught 17 passes. Had 11 consecutive 100-yard games. Some colleges are concerned about his size, but has offers from West Virginia, Bowling Green, Akron and Kent State. Runs a 4.4 40.

29. LaRod Stephens

Johnstown

Pos: RB Ht: 5-8 Wt: 165

Scouting: Like Central Catholic's Jarvis, there are concerns about Stephens because of his size. "Just watch me and you'll see," Stephens said, answering his critics. He had all the right answers for Johnstown last year. He was first-team all-state in Class AAA after rushing for 2,226 yards on 192 carries and scoring 23 touchdowns. He broke school record of former Pitt RB Artrell Hawkins Sr. Stephens committed to Pitt in the spring. Runs a 4.5 40.

30. Jeremy Bruce

Blackhawk

Pos: RB/DB Ht: 5-9 Wt: 185

Scouting: An excellent performance at the Nike camp at Penn State this spring opened the eyes of college recruiters. The offers started coming in after Bruce ran a 4.43 40 and was impressive in strength and agility tests. He committed to West Virginia on July 17, turning down Temple, Kent State and Akron. Was recruited as a slotback. Rushed for 1,767 yards on 203 carries as a junior and caught 23 passes.

Cleveland Plain Dealer Preseason Super 30 Players

http://www.cleveland.com/hsfootball/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/109346130167940.xml

Alex Boone, OT, St. Edward, Sr.

One of the top 100 players in the nation, the 6-8, 320-pound Boone is coming off an exceptional junior season, one that saw him grade out at better than 90 percent for his blocking. Bound for Ohio State on a football scholarship, he can power and drive the Eagles' running game and has the frame, technique and footwork to dominate as a pass blocker. Ohio State offered him after his sophomore season.

Jon Brown, QB, Westlake, Sr.

Brown should end his high school career as the most prolific passer in the history of the Southwestern Conference. He has already passed for 5,100 yards. Last season, he completed 182 of 264 passes for 2,172 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was intercepted just eight times. College interest in the 5-11, 180-pound Brown is on the upswing after he was named MVP of an elite camp in Las Vegas.

Mike Chambers, WR, Walsh Jesuit, Sr.

The 6-2, 190-pound Chambers has been offered by Michigan State, Indiana, Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green. He doesn't have exceptional speed, but makes up for that with soft hands and disciplined routes. He had 44 receptions for 823 yards in 2003. This kid goes across the middle without hesitation and battles for the ball.

Joe Cigas, CB, Benedictine, Sr.

Throw away the stop watches and the "guide to recruiting" books - this 5-11, 170-pound two-time All-Ohio selection can flat out play. His heart is more impressive than any 40-yard dash time. A product of the highly successful St. Thomas Moore CYO program, Cigas helped the Bengals to the Division III state championship last season by intercepting five passes, hitting with authority and excelling on special teams. In the state title game, he had a key fumble recovery, caused a fumble and blocked a kick. Some college program is going to get a steal.

Marko Cosic, LB, Brunswick, Sr.

Brunswick has been one of the area's most successful teams in recent seasons, chiefly because of its defense. Cosic was a big part of that during last season's Pioneer Conference co-championship and playoff run. The 6-1, 243-pounder had 94 tackles. He will likely be the school's first Division I college recruit since 1999 graduate Dave Harris.

Marcus Council, SS, Akron Garfield, Sr.

This 6-0, 205-pound athlete can freelance with the best of them. He is Mr. Versatility for the Rams, excelling as a running back, receiver and blocker on offense, and tough-minded on defense. He came up and made 33 solo tackles from his safety spot last season and intercepted three passes. Council leaves it all on the field, no matter where he plays. Many Big Ten schools, along with Pitt, Toledo and Bowling Green, have shown interest.

Billy Cundiff, QB, Green, Sr.

The 6-3, 210-pound Cundiff is regarded as one of the top five signal-callers in the state. Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin and the Mid-American Conference schools are on his recruiting list. Last season, he led the Bulldogs to a Suburban League championship and another playoff appearance by passing for 1,412 yards and 14 touchdowns. He completed 55 percent of his passes.

Mike Dinard, RB-LB, Padua, Sr.

Dinard bounced back from a leg injury he suffered in 2002 and helped the Bruins to the Division II playoffs last season. At 6-2, 222 pounds, he rushed for 956 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2003. He also had six receptions for 48 yards and two touchdowns. But it is his potential at linebacker at the next level that has earned him a scholarship to Northwestern. He carries a 4.65 grade-point average.

Thaddeus Gibson, OLB, Euclid, Jr.

Rival LEL coaches describe the 6-3, 207-pound Gibson as the best pure pass rusher in the area. He came of age in the Mentor game last season. Had a team-leading nine sacks in 2003, 22 quarterback hurries, 10 other tackles for losses and three caused fumbles. You must account for this kid on every play.

Shawn Glaser, OT/DT, Archbishop Hoban, Sr.

Recruiters love Glaser's initial step. And oh yeah, he's 6-8, 315 pounds. He has a big frame and runs well for a kid his size. Some recruiters have tabbed him as a guard at the next level.

A.J. Hass, OT/DT, Copley, Sr.

The Big Ten and Mid-American Conference recruiters like Hass' footwork, as well as his 6-6, 285-pound frame. He said he will not make a college decision until after the season. Like Boone, he is very athletic for a big man and has those long arms the recruiters covet. Hass also brings a mean streak to the field, something all linemen need to survive.

Joe Kleinsmith, DB-K-P, St. Edward, Sr.

The 6-1, 185-pound Kleinsmith has one of the strongest legs in Ohio. In helping the Eagles to a Division I state runner-up finish in 2003, he averaged better than 40 yards on his punts, had 29 touchbacks on his kickoffs and tied a school record by booming a 52-yard field goal in the state-semifinal victory over Toledo St. John's. An All-Ohio selection and an Indiana University recruit, Kleinsmith also had more than 30 tackles, made five interceptions and blocked five kicks.

Freddie Lenix, LB, Glenville, Sr.

Forget the size (6-0, 195), Lenix has every tool a linebacker needs. He gets off blockers in a hurry, runs like a defensive back and hits with pad-rattling authority. He also can cause havoc with his pass-rushing skills. Lenix made more than 150 tackles last season and, if it wasn't for his size, he would be the top- ranked senior in Ohio.

Terricko Marshall, DE, Maple Heights, Sr.

At 6-3, 230 pounds, Marshall has the frame to get much bigger. Last season, he led the charge for coach Jeff Rotsky's LEL Erie Division champions by making six sacks and 14 other tackles for losses. He also had 12 quarterback hurries and recovered two fumbles. Marshall pursues sideline-to sideline, never giving up on a play. His best football is still ahead of him.

Jim McCarthy, OL, Benedictine, Sr.

Entering his third season as the Bengals' mainstay up front, the 6-1, 296-pound McCarthy helped show the way for one of the top rushing offenses in the country last season. Described by Benedictine's coaching staff as the team's most consistent lineman, McCarthy was an All-Ohio honoree in 2003 and garnered all-district honors for the second consecutive season.

Jamario O'Neal, CB, Glenville, Sr.

O'Neal has the complete defensive secondary package - size (6-1, 182 pounds), strength, exceptional speed and a nose for the ball. His footwork, hip movement and athletic instincts enable him to play single coverage on the best receivers in the state. He has committed to Ohio State.

Jim Ramella, TE-OLB, St. Ignatius, Sr.

Solid on both sides of the ball, the 6-4, 240-pound Ramella has accepted a football scholarship from Boston College. BC recruited him as a tight end, but this kid can also bring it on defense. He made more than 80 tackles last season, including 40 solos, and had three sacks. He caught five touchdown passes and averaged 15.3 yards per reception.

Brian Robiskie, WR, Chagrin Falls, Sr.

The son of Browns offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie, Brian has good hands, uses his body well and has great concentration. He had 20 touchdown receptions in his first two years with the Tigers' varsity. Last season, the 6-4, 190-pound All-CVC and all- district selection caught 50 passes for an average of 14.9 yards per catch and had two kick returns for touchdowns.

Chris Rowell, S, Warrensville Heights, Sr.

Rugged Rowell (6-1, 175) totaled more than 60 tackles from his strong safety position last season. He also had eight sacks and two interceptions. He was recently timed at 4.46 in the 40 and has run under 4.4. Michigan, Toledo, Bowling Green, Boston College and West Virginia are among those universities interested.

Nick Simon, MLB-DL-OT, Shaker Heights, Sr.

The 6-2, 225-pound Simon has led the Raiders in tackles the past two seasons. A super-aggressive performer who always plays with great intensity, he is nicknamed "The Beast." A two- time All-Lake Erie League selection and an all-district and All- Ohio honoree in 2003, Simon also excels as an offensive lineman. Some major-college scouts say he has the athleticism to play fullback at the next level.

Curtis Smith, DE-FB, Glenville, Sr.

Athlete personified. The 6-3, 235-pound Smith is an impressive physical specimen who has played several positions. He also is a mainstay on the highly regarded Tarblooders basketball team. His versatility has him listed as a potential lineman, middle linebacker, fullback or big running back at the next level.

Trey Stross, WR-S-P, Avon Lake, Sr.

Stross did a little bit of everything last season to help the Shoremen win their first Division II state championship. His big-play ability and athleticism as a wide receiver drew the attention of several Division I schools. The 6-3, 190-pounder has orally committed to Iowa. Last season, he scored 10 touchdowns and averaged 25.8 yards per reception.

Tyrell Sutton, TB, Archbishop Hoban, Sr.

The 5-9, 190-pound Sutton has orally committed to Northwestern. He can become Ohio's all-time "unofficial" leading rusher if he gains 2,020 yards this season. An all-state and Plain Dealer All-Star selection in 2003, he has quick feet, hits a hole with speed and authority, and is more than willing to take it between the tackles. Rushed for 2,437 yards last season and found the end zone 34 times.

Marlon Terry, TE/FB/MLB, Buchtel, Sr.

Another of Buchtel's exceptional athletes, "Tenacious Terry" will be joining teammate Bryan Williams at Pitt next summer. Terry broke his leg during the Griffins' scrimmage on Saturday and might miss a good part of the season. But when healthy, the 6-2, 275-pound Terry moves like a much smaller player. In fact, he is slated to play fullback for the Griffins. He may end up playing as a down lineman or a rush end at the next level.

B.J. Travers, MLB, Westlake, Sr.

Travers has been compared to Ohio State defensive lineman and former Highland High all-state performer Mike Kudla. At 6-1, 243 pounds, Travers is exceptionally strong. He has benched 420 pounds, has done a 575 squat, a 485 dead lift and a 385 clean. Travers was recruited by Southern California, Oklahoma and other major colleges before orally accepting Iowa's offer last month. He had a school-record 194 tackles last season.

Eric Tupta, LB-RB, Gilmour Academy, Sr.

Yes, he competes for a small-school program. But talent is talent, and Tupta has plenty of that. He also has the size and strength to go with it. At 6-3, 240 pounds, Tupta has put up a 300-pound bench press and a 500-pound squat. Smart and aggressive, the young senior can dominate from his middle linebacker position. He also has the power and balance to run over defenders.

Chris Wells, RB/LB, Akron Garfield, Jr.

Some preseason publications have Wells rated as the No.1 junior prospect in the state. His running style has been compared to that of Eddie George. At 6-2, 220 pounds with a time of 4.48 in the 40-yard dash, Wells has received early offers from Ohio State and Michigan. Rushed for 819 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, operating behind a so-so offensive line. Butch Reynolds has helped him hone his game in the offseason.

Bryan Williams, CB, Buchtel, Sr.

The slick, savvy Williams (6-0, 190) has committed to Pittsburgh. He plays the run with authority and had five interceptions in 2003. If necessary, Williams can also take it to the house as a running back and wide receiver. He has exceptional speed and is fearless in the secondary.

Sirod Williams, DE-LB-WR, Garfield Heights, Sr.

Injured an ACL last year, but showed no hesitation as he won Garfield Heights' "Top Dawg" off-season conditioning program for strength and agility. At 6-4, 225, he has been projected as a linebacker and a rush end. The big schools are starting to come around, now that they realize Williams is ready, willing and able.

Lawrence Wilson, DE/TE, SVSM, Sr.

Ohio State and Notre Dame have offered the 6-5, 235-pound Wilson, recruiting him as a tight end. This kid has sky's-the-limit potential and, if he stays focused, could become a dominant force this fall. Tough, athletic and mobile, he also is one of the top basketball players in Northeast Ohio. It will be interesting to see which sport is in his future.

http://recruiting.theinsiders.com/2/294649.html

In our revised National Hot 100 you will notice six new names on the list – safety Clarence Ward (LaMarque, Texas), wide receiver Selwyn Lymon (Fort Wayne, Ind.), linebacker Anthony Felder (Seattle, Wa.), offensive lineman David Moosman (Libertyville, Ill.) and cornerbacks Cary Harris (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and Mike Brown (Jersey City, N.J.). Taken out of the Hot 100 is linebacker Chris Collins (Texarkana, Texas), offensive tackle Paul Duncan (Dallas, Ga.), tight end Tommy Trott (Montgomery, Al.), linebacker Neefy Moffett (Melbourne, Fl.), wide receiver Talonnie Russell (Detroit, Mi.) and quarterback Greg Paulus (Syracuse, N.Y.).

Paulus is without question one of the nation’s finest quarterback prospects but we realize the chances of him playing college football are very, very slim so we elected to give his spot on this list to someone else. Paulus will attend Duke and play basketball for Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

There was also some movement on TheInsiders.com National Hot 100. Running back Jonathan Stewart (Olympia, Wa.) and quarterback Mark Sanchez (Mission Viejo, Calif.) both moved from the low teens into the top 10. Cornerback Demetrice Morley (Miami, Fl.) moved up about twenty spots and the biggest move was made by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (Portland, Or.), who was elevated from the low 90s to No. 49.

Of course some fell in the rankings like linebacker Luthur Brown (Lakewood, Calif.), Bryan Evans (Jacksonville, Fl.) and Charles Jackson (Buena Vista, Ga.). But obviously they didn’t fall out of TheInsiders.com National Hot 100.

Southern California has only three commits and is still in the top 20. I have a feeling that Petey and all his #1 guys will bring them into the top 5 before all is said and done.
