Limewire help needed....

Setup: Toshiba laptop (Windows Vista), Linksys wireless router, Dell home PC (Windows XP), McAfee Security System

Problem: Limewire is no longer able to connect when using my laptop. It shows that it's detecting a firewall. But when using the PC it's fine.

Tried solutions:

1.Direct connected the laptop to make sure there was no sort of problem w/ the router.
2. Added Limewire program to trusted sites in McAfee (or at least tried to).
3. Disabled McAfee firewall completely just to see if this was the problem.
4. Disabled Windows firewall completely to see if this was the problem.
5. Have gone to Limewire help page and tried the solutions there.

Background: Bought the laptop in February, downloaded songs fine the last time I tried (which was about 2-3 months ago). Now for some reason, it will not allow me to connect. The program starts up, but will not connect to search for songs. And like I said before, it still works fine when downloading on the PC, which leads me to believe nothing is wrong w/ the modem/router setup, and that it has to be something specifically w/ the laptop.

Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.

Notice I asked that question for a reason...

I have a couple ideas, but I'm tired and dont want to look retarded, hardware is really my thing. I'll be back in about 7 hours with an intelligent response.
LOL, I promise that any response that you give will not be viewed as retarded by ME. I'm the dumbass that can't figure this out. And to be completely honest, I've been trying for a couple of days now.:smash:

I'm sorry, I'm not that much of a tech guy. I'm not familiar w/ what is or is not an integrated solution. It's set up through a Linksys wireless router, not sure if that answers your question or not. But like I mentioned, I did try direct connecting to the modem to see if that would solve the problem. Also, it's the same setup I've had since I bought the laptop, and it worked a few months ago.

This is me dealing with computers.......

hardy har har...

anywho; the device your using to receive a wireless signal on the laptop (example) a slot card, a USB tool, or an integrated solution (laptop internal without being to specific about it)

What about the rest of the network connections? Can you pull up a web page? what about pinging/packet sharing between your laptop and other computers on your network?

I apologize, I don't think I know enough about it for you to be able to help me. The above post looks like a foreign language to me. I know what ping is, but have no clue what a pinging/packet sharing is, or how I would go about locating it. Thank you for trying though. I really appreciate it.

p.s. yes, I believe it IS an integrated solution. It's whatever that came w/ the laptop, nothing that I would have had to install or plug in externally.

I may be able to help with this. Not sure if I am gonna be able to exlpain how to fix it, but I can probably tell you what it is. Limewire, and all file sharing/torrent programs are able to basically force a port open in your router, in order to allow traffic through to your computer. It uses a specific port. However, at times, they will fail to open the port on the router, and this is the problem you get. What you want to do is:

1. Find out what port limewire is attempting to use
2. Go into your router GUI (You would need to read your instruction book for your router, or simply google the router model)

3. There will be a section for "port forwarding" or something to that effect. Basically you want to enter whatever port limewire is trying to use, and forward it directly to the IP address of your laptop (whatever the 192.168.X.X address it is using.

Lemme know if you have any questions.

Thanks Brutus, I'll try this at some point tonight. I have a model WRT54GS router, and I went to portforward.com. I need to finish creating a static ip address. I tried earlier but I don't think I had the correct DNS. I'm going to have to call my ISP and get the correct one.

Just a question though, would I still need to do this if I bypassed the router and simply direct connected??

No if you plug your lappy straight into your cable modem, etc, that should bypass the problem. I didnt notice you said you had done that. My fault. Did you try simply going into your settings in limewire, and changing the port that it is supposed to use? Might be somethin specifically blocking that port?
