  • It's seems relatively clear what life on scholly is when the individual is living on campus and in a dorm.. with open access to team training table but

How does it work when the individual decides to live off campus?
Do they get a monthly allowance? for rent? for food? for things like laundry?

Obviously the student athlete returns home on occasion
Do they get an allowance to travel back/forth? once/twice a year?

Who pays for any medical care if the athlete gets hurt:
    while playing their normal sport?
If doing anything else including horsing around or stepping on glass?
Is this part of the athletic scholarship or is the athlete given paid medical like any other student has access to purchase when enrolling?

Does the school pay for all athletic gear the individual uses?

and are these answers tOSU specific or for any college (exhawg, etc..)?

mods. feel free to move this to whatever thread you please

Not a D1 or even college athlete.

Pretty sure you are given a quarter / semester check through financial aid that would cover room and meals as if you were in the dorm to pay for your own apartment, utilities, and food and whatnot.

School definitely pays for athletic gear and lots of it, at least at OSU. I was at Herbstreits house back when he played and him and his football roommates had tons of OSU gear there. Wouldn't surprise me if the 3 of them literally had 2,000 pounds of OSU athletic gear.

Sports injuries are certainly covered. I am not sure, but believe we cover non sports injuries, even ones that happened before enrolling. Can't remember the recruit but we had one with an injury (knee?) that enrolled early just to get the surgery done basically.

Doubt they get a travel allowance other than for bowl games.

When life altering injuries occur (Tyson Gentry, Eric LeGrand, etc..)
To what degree does the university pay? for lifetime care?

"Between insurance she pays for, Rutgers' insurance and the NCAA's insurance, Eric's medical bills and all his equipment are covered for now. It's well into the six figures already."

Sounds like in these cases they all share some coverage.

Six figures is easy.. per month.... and with many policies covering 85% plus deductibles.. it can run six figures out of pocket a year.. trust me... tag on PT which most often is capped... and that's another $100K OOP.. per year..

so a lifetime of medical care is mind boggling... does the university and NCAA provide for the lifetime in such cases?

Don't know of any health insurance policies that don't cover life time treatment, a pretty common thing so I don't see any way the NCAA and school wouldn't provide the same. My company does another Big Ten school and it's the same.

I played a long time ago. D1 but not tOSU level.

Some married guys lived off campus and got a check, for the semester I believe. We had one guy that lived in the dorm and got a check, I am positive his family was dirt floor poor. We had an athletic dorm that housed all the athletes, football, basketball, baseball and swimming. The golfers and other minor sports did not get full rides and most lived in the student dorm.

The catastrophic injuries may be covered. Me and most of my ex teammates that have bad knees, ankles and the like, we don't have any coverage. They did pay for my knee surgeries and rehab, while I was in school. I wonder about the guys that were getting shots before each game. Can they even walk today?

No travel money. I had a car and brought quite a few guys home, especially on breaks.

We got a room, tuition and books. Training table back then was only during the season and it was not that great. All equipment was paid for by the school.

That was before big money TV.

I did get perks like free shoes, free restaurant meals, haircuts and free drinks at bars. Got a traffic ticket dismissed. Jocks got the girls even back then. Everyone knew who we were.

I am sure things are much better now. My recruitment process was probably totally against current rules.

Our safety director's son signed with the citadel. Strong, fast kid, just short. The training table and facilities are much better now.

In the end for most the value is in the education. Most never take advantage of that though.

I played about 10 years ago, Lower classmen had to live in dorms, upper classmen had to option to live off campus, they covered up to a certain amount to cover your living expenses, also we got a general stipend monthly for all expenses.

Athletic gear? we just went to the equipment manager...

We of course were fully covered medically

As far as travel, we were on our own...Greyhound and an occasional plane trip were my main means of travel.

Now we did get a per diem amount when we traveled to big schools (U of Minnesota 01'), (Ole Miss 01')

My experience is 12+ years old so things may have changed, but here is what I can remember at a school other than OSU. We received a stipend every semester to cover expenses like rent, food, etc. For some reason $3,800 is stuck in my head. During the season we had training table after practice so the check was reduced slightly for those meals. Nothing was taken for gameday meals. Just an FYI while living on campus our food card started with 3x as much as regular students so by the time the semester was over we were usually buying cases of poweraide, water, pop tarts, cookies, and anything else that we could take back to the rooms as snacks.

All college athletes are first covered by their personal health insurance and then the school picks up whatever is left so there is no expense to the player. In my case my parents already had insurance coverage for me that covered everything so the school never had to pay anything for the two surgeries that I had. I think other medical expenses are on the player/family, but trainers and team doctors are available so it has to be something pretty serious to blow back on the player. I sprained my ankle in racquetball class and hurt my wrist playing co-ed softball and was able to just go to the trainers for help.

The only additional money that I can remember was a small stipend while taking summer classes. I had to actively be taking classes in order to receive money, which is why most guys tried to take a summer class. That might be one place where OSU can provide more assistance since their budget is large enough that they can allow everyone to take summer class and provide as much of a stipend as the NCAA permits. I'm sure my school was limited by the amount of money they could scrape together. There was no travel money and the only time you were allowed to have a job was during summer. Ironically we had several guys that had been walk-ons and were put on schollie, but ended up quitting because they were no longer allowed to have their jobs outside of football.

On a funny side story we stayed in a hotel every game and would get a couple meals the day before the game and 2-3 meals the day of the game depending on the time of the game. After our meetings on Friday night everyone would get a large Papa Johns pizza as a snack. The university paper got word of this and wrote a big article about all the "perks" we received like hotel (for home games), meals, etc. The only thing any other students asked us about was the pizza.

Let me know if I missed anything and I'll try to dust off the memory banks a little more.
