Les Wexner donates $100 million to Ohio State

It should be noted that Wexner has said that this donation, while being a milestone, is not the end of his donations to the university. I would expect another, bookending donation on the back end of the $2.5B campaign.

This is the first year in five that it's been raised. It's still lower than many lesser universities in the state.

That being said, I do think Wexner's donation seemed to be geared towards areas (med center, cancer hospital, arts center) that benefit the city as much as the university. It's not where I would invest a hundred large in Ohio State, but it's his money...not mine.

A better indication of how fundraising will effect tuition will be in what portion of the overall campaign is dedicated to raising undergraduate scholarship funds rather than the preferences of any single donor.

I'm very happy that OSU got the donation, don't want to sound ungrateful.

Just hard to be that excited when I see the school getting 100 million and knowing that I still have to pay over 3k per quarter.

Awesome donation though. :)

Leslie Wexner to step down from Ohio State Board of Trustees

Alex Shumate reappointed to fill Wexner’s term
Two new trustees appointed

The Ohio State University trustee Leslie H. Wexner has announced he will step down from his remaining term which ends in May 2020. Alex Shumate, whose second term on the board concluded earlier this year, has been reappointed by Ohio Governor John Kasich to fill the remaining eight years of Wexner’s term.

Wexner, who is chair, president and CEO of Columbus-based Limited Brands, was serving his third term on the Board of Trustees. He was appointed to the board in 2005 and was reappointed in 2011 for a new term to end in 2020. He previously served on the board from 1988-1997, during which time he was chair from 1996-97. This past April, he completed a three-year term as board chair. All told, he has served 18 years on the Board of Trustees.

Board leadership remains unchanged. In February, trustees elected Robert Schottenstein as chair, and Brian K. Hicks and John C. “Jack” Fisher as vice chairs.

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee says the university has benefited from a remarkably strong board. "Les Wexner has provided extraordinary leadership to the university during times of significant change and progress, and we are grateful for his service. We are also fortunate to continue to have Alex Shumate’s wisdom and guidance."

To revisit this point, tuition has subsequently gone down to zero for any in-state kid whose parents make 60K or less per year (though that came out of the energy deal windfall not Wexner's gift). I'd also venture that our last decade of fundraising has created a lot of other need and merit based aid so that net price has gone down across the board for most students even if they're not covered by the free tuition guarantee.
